I think he does the same thing he did to the Lakers, bounces the following season to Houston.
Plus that was the year following that lone great season Melo had on the Knicks, so the fall off in production would've shytted on Dwight.
All in all there was very few places Dwight could have went to succeed at that point in time. These places are: San Antonio, Chicago Indiana and LAL. The only reason his time as a Laker didn't pan out is personality, injury, and the CP3 veto.

So the Magic had agreed to the framework of a trade and Howard said he was gonna opt out to force that deal. And on that plane ride the entire team (who would know what's going on) treated it as a goodbye to Dwight. But the Magic were not going to trade him?
They refused our offers later that summer after the Joe Johnson deal when Dwight and his people asked for a trade to Brooklyn (which is hilarious since 4 months earlier he had the chance to leave and passed on it). So yes at that point the Magic refused our offers and waited for other deals. But they were 100% trading him to us at the deadline until he signed that opt-in out of nowhere.
