I don’t really see race and gender as comparable.

Race is a construct. A Rachael Dolzeal(sic) really only identifies with the culture attached to being African American. It has nothing to do with being of African descent. She admired black culture so she wanted to be associated with it. She is also making an active choice to be identified as such.

Transgender, and by extension, gay people, do not merely identify with a culture or see it as an active choice. I can’t think of a transgender person that said “I became trans because I admired the culture or I just wanted to be transgender”. As evidenced by this thread, they’ve got enough unwarranted stigma attached to them as it is.

I think he’ll be fine with his family and a good support structure behind him. I think many trans people have no one in their corner and that’s what can lead them down bad paths. Families disown them, friends do the same, that’s when things become amplified.

I’d be curious to see how many in this thread would disown their son if this happened.
