He's right in a way. The joke did overtake anything he ever did or said.

Insert you favorite rapper in his same shoes. If the artist is dope, publicity can only help. Marketing is essential to selling music.

Therefore, it was, at best, a wasted opportunity.. at worst just an easy excuse for people thinking his shyt was wack.

The genius of Dave’s portrayal of Dylan in the sketch wasn’t the specific things he said, but his ability to pinpoint and depict the intrinsic delusions of grandeur the real Dyan showed that we all felt watching the MTV show. That way, when Dave said those things like “Dylan, Dylan, Dylan” we all laughed because we all understood where it came from and how accurate it felt to real life.

If Dave had portrayed Ness and said those same things it wouldn’t have been funny because it wouldn’t have felt true to the person he was imitating.

Fast forward 20 years and you watch the video in OP of the real Dylan and you still hear and feels those delusions and inflated sense of character. To the point where the real Dylan actually feels like the Dylan/Dave from the sketch.

…..he overlooking the fact that he really was acting like a diva on the show ..which gave Chappelle the foundation of being over the top wit it in the skit lol
He's a dumbass, the whole premise of comedy skits is too exaggerate the funny shyt, they don't copy real world examples verbatim.
