Superstar
that first album was the truth.
depending on what you think "unsung" should be, i can see why you say that about chante moore, in any case, i did enjoy it since i never knew her music outside of "wey u" on waiting to exhale and "chante's got a man"...but yea, she doesn't really fit the bill of unsung as she never really mattered lol
nate and quik are the epitome of Unsung as you defined it so i highly disagree.I mean, ive been watching since the 1st episode, long before they even started putting rappers on there.
it was almost always artists that were huge but their legacies just didn't carry on like they should've. basically huge stars that weren't top priorities at Motown & such.
its like the names are getting more & more random the past few seasons.
chante moore - I can look at all day, but they could wrapped her chit up in 30 minutes. same with Yo-Yo, donnell jones, and a few others. I feel that way about dj quik & nate dogg too.
nate and quik are the epitome of Unsung as you defined it so i highly disagree.
He wrote and produced all of his albums, wrote the raps on Bel Biv Devoe's "Poison", was one of the first fashion risk takers in hip hop, paving the way for ppl like Kanye/Pharrel and set trends, he was very lyrical for his time, and he was able to reinvent himself as a very successful producer post the "your style is played out like Kwame.." Diss...he did "on fire" for Lloyd banks, "turn the lights off" for tweet n Missy Elliot, "switch" for will smith , "listen" for talib kweli and has records on everybody from method man to Christina Aguilera...not to mention he just produced Vivian Greens entire new album ... I think he's more than deserving of an episode.
nate dogg doesn't even have his own hits. he flopped on that end, and was just a hook singer. and I almost lost my lunch when they were trying to give him the credit for artists that were already established. like when butch Cassidy(I think) tried to give nate dogg the credit for "cant deny it" by saying that fabulous was a new act coming out, as if fab wasn't already the most anticipated new artist in hip-hop that year and had already tore down 106th with lil mo.
that's what I'm saying. theyre doing struggle episodes now.
dj quik, you can make a case for his early stuff, but after that he was just around. I mean, if you think highly of his catalog, I can see him being on a show called Underrated but not Unsung.
the epitome of Unsung to me are episodes on groups like bone thugs & the spinners. I mean, I know every episode cant be on acts like those but how did we go from that to nate dogg & dj quik? especially when theres so many deserving acts that didn't get an episode?
sounds great......for a "life after" episode.
if Kwame had a "life after", i'd prolly plan my night around it. but a 60-minute episode of unsung? not feelin that.
didn't adina howard get one? if she qualifies, monifah definitely does. plus her being on r&b divas prolly got her the inside track.
looking forward to 40 and Next, next had two dope albums, they lowkey really took the whole sex music to a whole other level. RL could sing too. they never get the nostalgic threads cats like dru hill, silk, and shai get.
Nate was super important to the culture tho, and he was pivotal to a lot of hit songs. I definitely think he's unsung...we just gonna disagree heredj quik, you can make a case for his early stuff, but after that he was just around. .
I always thought unsung was for artists who were influential but didn't get the credit they deserve...what's "life after"?
the epitome of Unsung to me are episodes on people like Isaac hayes,, sly & the family stone, the spinners, and rap acts like bone thugs, whodini, fat boys, big daddy kane. that's what the show used to be all about. I mean, I know every episode cant be on acts like those but it still followed the pattern. now how did we go from that to nate dogg & dj quik? especially when theres so many deserving acts that didn't get an episode?
shoot, warren g should've got an episode if we're gonna do one on somebody from 213 or a rapping producer.

And Quik is the same, not just for his rapping career but production and they type of production he does. Dude is an overlooked legend to the game in general, and certified legend for the west...I don't even see this as arguable. Unsung on groups like Bone or people like Isaac Hayes is actually the stretch for me, because they got the accolades during their tenure and people still know their legacies, as opposed to their legcies being washed away.
Anyway, I appreciate this series in general, we're at a time where music moves so fast that crazy amounts of legends are being overlooked or not given their proper respect, hopefully these episodes educate a few.
How the hell issac hayes unsung but Nate Dogg and DJ Quik aint?u mention the name issac hayes and he gets universal respect and props....mention Nate Dogg and u got nikkas talkin sideways sayin "He was just a hook singer"....u need to be sittin indian style when that Nate,Quik, and 40 episode come on

super important is a bit much. nothing would be different if nate dogg never came out. meanwhile theres people who really were super-important that got completely skipped over, and it looks like they don't plan on turning back.
and quik being a west coast legend isn't enough. especially when theres plenty of legends from the west coast that are legends all-around.
as for the bolded, that's what the show was built on. artists who were huge in real-time but their legacies don't get the proper treatment for whatever reasons. but now theyre starting to do the show on artists who were never there. and I don't know why cuz theres a ton of unsung artists legends that they still didn't touch.
and naw, people who weren't in tune with rap back then, don't know bone's legacy. a lot of youngns think they were just the group that made crossroads & 1st of the month. not knowing that they were arguably bigger than those 2pac & biggie guys that they were taught to worship.
I have the nate & quik episodes on tape already. I take it that you don't watch the show.and listen, I was a fan of both of them as a kid but
Isaac hayes names bells but people that really KNOW Isaac hayes like they should.
Nah i watch it if it happens to be on,i gotta watch those episodes though....lowkey Unsung is a shytty documentary series.
