EA did not lobby for Xbox One’s used game DRM
Disrupting the popular “EA and Microsoft are in cahoots to ruin used games” narrative haunting comment threads everywhere, EA chief operating officer Peter Moore has said EA had nothing to do with the Xbox One’s licensing policies and hasn’t even figured out whether to get involved.

“As the guy who is the chief operating officer of Electronic Arts I can tell you that EA did not aggressively lobby for the platform holders to put some gating function in there to allow or disallow used games,” Moore told Polygon.

“I am on record as being a proponent of used games. I like the ecosystem. I like the fact that it’s kept pricing at a good level for eight years. I like the fact that someone can buy a physical game and see some equity in that game. That keeps GameStop vibrant and they are a great launch and marketing partner for us.

“EA has never had a conversation, and I have been present at all of them, with all of the manufacturers, saying you must put a system in place that allows us to take a piece of the action or even stop it. Absolutely incorrect.”

The executive said that EA hasn’t yet figured out whether it’s going to opt-in to Microsoft’s used-game blocking system, let alone the nitty-gritty details of what it might charge to reactivate a used license if it did join in.

“We have not internally even begun to sit down and answer those questions,” he said.

“We will figure out what we need to do. This thing just happened and we need to reconvene and hear what people think and talk to our retail partners and our first party partners. We had no idea what Sony was going to announce. We’ll reconvene next week and figure it all out.”

EA recently cancelled its Online Pass system which many commenters – including certain cynical VG247 staffers – assumed this was because it would be getting on board Microsoft’s new DRM. Moore said the real reason was that consumers didn’t like it.

“I was at the meeting. It just wasn’t resonating with the consumer. It just wasn’t consumer friendly,” he said.

“It was hard work and it was as much work for the guy who would never trade his game in, even though we gave him some digital content, because you’re punching numbers in. We just made a decision. I was the chair at the meeting. We said enough of Online Pass.

“Online Pass was more trouble to the consumer than it was worth. It was a mistake. The consumer’s feedback was that this thing gets in the way of a good experience so let’s get rid of it.”

i still dont get ms way of spinning this into a positive thing..

like how did they speak about this?

Basically you get to install your discs and play them directly from the hardrive. So the os will work more like a smart phone. You can be running multiple games/apps at the same time and switch between them instantly. Also you will be able to access your entire games library/profile from any Xbox without the need for discs. And lastly you can gift and share games with friends and family remotely over the Internet without the need to exchange discs.

Wow, they just gonna act like they dont know their friends huh.

Its amazing how the difference people can make when they stick together as friends. EA seeing all those ps4 preorders and demand and now want to get their act together. They tried to bluff the industry. They tried to make friends think that without them gaming would be nothing but fortunately for them friends, and Sony knew otherwise. Now look at them, turning their back on MicroLossed!

Rumors were that Microsoft came up with the idea and approached publishers. He might not be lying considering all other Microsoft rumors ended up being true

Definitely agree EA trying to distance themselves from this fiasco... Why wouldn't they? :laff:

The ps4 preoorders are slaughtering xb1. They only see dollar signs. Taking MS payola, letting MS get beat up PR wise even though EA benefits, AND eating good off PS4 sales... EA aint shyt for that

Ok can EA go to Microsoft and opt out of the program? Request their games be playable as per Xbox 360 standards? I'm sure Microsoft would be able to accommodate such a request...

I think M$ would have prefered to go to a strictly digital download system. but that would have eliminated used games altogether, and clearly retailers and consumers weren't ready for that

in many ways, I think gamers have held themselves back by clinging onto this old crap. people want to have their cake and eat it: they want 2013 games, but they expect the simplicity of a NES

how does me having a physical disc hinder innovation? seems to me you can have a disc and still download it to the system? correct?

the only thing pure digital games accomplish is destroying the used games market....

it hinders innovation by making things unnecessarily complicated. they don't even play the game off the disc anymore, so it really it just a 'middleman'. and personally I think that the network needed for distributing physical discs drives the price of games up

as a PC gamer, I don't even think about used games (or trading/lending games), because shyt is cheap and convenient

I wish you'd list some points on why you think that because right now you have me like :ANYWORD:

Companies want to make that guap they have to try to cater to the wants of the majority or bring forth a plan that will turn the customers from their competition, they can't afford to have their own preferences that would alienate the consumers. The consumers preference is the priority...
