Earning Royalties for your music online

I been missing out like crazy. My boy stopped by my house the other day and shows me his TuneCore account. For about 4 months straight he's been getting a MINIMUM of $400 a month in royalties from his music videos on Youtube alone. Anyone else getting that royalty money?
I need to step it up and make sure I'm not leaving any money out there.

never got that deep into it, but yea if you gone be releasing music on the net then you definitely need to make sure your paperwork is on point so any potential revenue can be made.

I think a lot of people are sleepin on this. Before uploading ANY music, artists NEED to register with ASCAP or BMI and get start getting their music protected properly. People uploading stuff to youtube left and right. Meanwhile, youtube is eating off of the ad revenue from your views and you aren't getting a crumb off of that. Theres money out here and people are just leaving it on the table.

Yea I agree with the registering, but even for those who are unfamiliar with the copyright laws. if I am not mistaken, new changes in laws were made within the last 5 years which allows any artists (producer or rapper) to claim original ownership as long as they can prove they created the work before someone else. the "poor man's copyright" involves sending yourself certified mail of your lyrics or beats, you're not suppose to ever open it unless required (such as a court case to prove who originally created the music).

The ad money that Youtube makes is cool, but until you begin to get big views on your uploads, you're not going to truly eat off of it. for the most part (and this is just me) I view Youtube as nothing more than a place to learn, connect and share.

yea, I don't know why rappers don't start writing books and doing seminars for upcoming acts. if I ever get my foot in the door and get some plaques under my name, I'd be writing books every year on what to do and not do, how to register and the whole 9. rappers be pissing me off with that shyt because they could help new artists dodge pitfalls.

Yea you always need proof. Poor man's copyright is an ineffective method though. A lot of people think that works bit a judge will throw it out. I've seen emails used and work in good defense. I definitely encourage registration if anyone wants to sue for damages. Register via your state.gov you can knock the process out for as little as $35

Its not JUST about suing though. You need to be registered to properly collect your royalties. EVERY artist needs to wake up and get on this. People are eating off your music and you aren't doing anything about it. I personally didn't take this seriously until my boy woke me up about it all.

Yea people need to register with ASCAP BMI or Sesac. That's inferred if people want to make music more than a hobby. The business is mainly publishing. That's somethING every artist and producer needs.

Which is what I've been looking into quite a bit for a while now. Instead of establishing my own traditional Record Label LLC to release music I'm going to establish a music publishing company that also has the function of a record label, creating and distributing recordings, but the primary business is publishing music.

That's interesting. Any idea what kinda numbers he was doing in views, sales, etc. to generate the, numbers?
