to me a great finisher is one that

a) is unique from most traditional wrestling moves
b) appears devastating
c) a reflection of the wrestler using it

the earthquake splash was all of those things. it checked all 3 boxes.

People's elbow is too.

a) Was definitely unique at the time. Nobody had a move like that. And it's influenced a generation of followers that try to do something similar.

b) It was just an elbow drop, so I can't say it was extremely devestating, but the presentation and everyone laying down for it made it work.

c) Was the essence of Rock. Flashy, swagged out and over the top showmanship. Wasn't traditional, nor did it have to be, because the fans LOVED that shyt.

That doesn't prevent it from being a great finisher though.

Hogan has been over for 30 years with a simple leg drop. Doesn't have to be flashy (which the P.E. is) or complex to be effective.

i didn't say it wasn't effective. obviously the P.E. was amazing and highly influential spot, but as a FINISHER it falls real short. it's ridiculous for a hard fought match to be brought to an end by an elbow drop.

and yes the leg drop was awful too.

If the P.E. wasn't proceeded by the spine buster of Rock Bottom, I'd agree with that. I've always seen it as him puting the icing on top of an already finished opponent.

It definitely isn't a "hit this out of nowhere and the match is over" thing though.

plus it also depends on the era too. fukkin rick martel's finisher was a BOSTON CRAB lol.
