Criminals now have possession of eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) customer names, account passwords, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers and birth dates.

The company said the passwords were encrypted and are virtually impossible to be deciphered. Still, as a precaution, eBay is asking everyone to reset their passwords late Wednesday.

The company isn't saying how many of its 148 million active accounts were affected -- or even how many customers had information stored in that database. But an eBay spokeswoman said the hack impacted "a large number of accounts."

me too, i mean this whole thing where hackers get a hold of employees' log in credentials and then get access to the database seems a little too common in all these stories. These employees should be investigated and fired if that's the case.

Why don't you like eBay? My main issue with them are the crazy fees they charge at every avenue possible

If you really want me to rant...

Horrible fees. Everything from charging a couple cents to start your auction at a certain time to double dipping by basically forcing PayPal down your throat. Pro-buyer, anti-seller. Can't even leave negative feedback for a buyer in a place full of horrendous buyers, many who don't speak English as a first language, which causes so many problems. Miserable customer service. Good luck getting anything resolved from your friendly representative in Bangalore named "Donald". Constantly changing policies that are not communicated well, such as now allowing the seller to end one item early per calendar year and anything after that is now subject to a final value fee based upon the highest bid at that time. Find out a lot the hard way there. The FedEx con. Read up on the number of people who think they're getting a good deal by using eBay's relationship with FedEx, only to get an adjustment in fees after the package is delivered. I've paid $5 to $10 more per package the past few months and just now realized what they've been doing. I have a reliable commercial scale and have never been adjusted by UPS. Pathetically buggy site. After doing upwards of 100k on there the past year, the site randomly associated my account with an email address I used on eBay 10 years ago, which wasn't verified, so it prevented me from creating a listing for Beats by Dre headphones because eBay doesn't want unverified people selling popular commercial products. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot.

Amazon is pretty bad for sellers too, but even with the higher fees, my experience has been better there.

Eventually someone will come along and crush eBay. There's no good reasons for it to exist, except for having first-mover brand recognition and no good alternative.

my main gripe is the double dipping they do with PayPal. Should be illegal.

ok eBay owns PayPal.
if you sell something eBay gets a cut of what the item sold for known as "Final Value Fee" and then when the buyer pays thru PayPal (99.999% of the time) they (eBay) get another cut off the top again known as a "transaction fee".

Basically a shytload of the same fees paid on both sides.
