Maybe. Maybe not. Most know ones are probably owned by 3 or 4 companies, and small, indoe stuff would probably be cheap. The Tall Man from Phantasm, for instance. The guy who wrote and directed all of them owns it, so you're writing him a one time check, or a small royalty. Also, with the movie business down, it's promo and free money for the studios.
I would think it would be too hard to get licensing for enough characters.
