The Warriors just won the title last year with the strength of their team being the defense. They had the #17 offense and #1 defense. The Celtics were also a defensive team, as were the Heat that nearly beat them in the ECF.Yeah NFL is crazy. Like I said before, you can have the best defense winning one year then the best offense winning the next.
While the NFL definitely did cater more to offense, they did it in a way where defense is still a major, game-winning/game-defining factor.
They going to let the CB get physical. They're going to let there be PI sometimes.
They're going to penalize with holding calls, chop-blocking, illegal formations, etc. by the offense.
You'll probably see more offensive holding calls than defensive holding calls.
Last few years alone we've seen so many touchdowns and big plays called back because of holding and offensive penalties.
That leads to defense still being a main identity to these NFL teams and an anticipation to matchups:
"I wonder how the __'s offense will do vs the __'s defense."
Goes back to a very primal, root-level fundamental principle: offense vs defense.
There’s 8 teams right now on pace to win 50+ games, 7 of those 8 have top 10 defenses with Denver being the only exception.
Yes rules have been changed that have benefited offenses but this idea that defense is no longer impacting games in the NBA just isn’t true.
