the black cat is my crown...
i joked about working from home one time and my boss almost turned into the poltergeist... talking about you can work from home permanently if you want... i'm like calm down, climb off the ledge guy... it's all about micro managing... management is terrified if they think they can't squeeze 150% productivity out of you every minute of the day...

I agree with this 100 percent, however a lot of service economic sectors would collapse though

I could do 100 percent of my job at home. I would take a 20k paycut to actually do that too.
No you wouldnt take a single dime off your pay check. never say that out loud. NEVER. they are probably under paying you as we speak no matter how content you may be with your pay. you have no idea how people are being paid to do absolutely nothing. So no, i want to work from home with even better pay. why? i'm saving you money. and i will be more efficient, its already been statistically proven.

but thats the problem. they can actually get you to produce more if you worked from home. the stats are there. they dont want you to leave the work place because they FEEL as if they can't manage without micro managing. they do not know how to actually be a good MANAGER (interview and hire top talent, come up with strategies on how to approach projects, problems, how to not just put out fires but how to be fire retardant, and lastly how to help their employees advance their skills and probably their positions). if you're not doing those things well, you're not a good manager. just checking people's time cards talking about you're late or why did you miss another day. is something they are not needed for. the computers can tell you how late you were and how many days you have missed. they are not needed for this. but this is the easiest thing a manager can do. and most managers go this route for that reason. they are not good managers, and their managers are not good managers which means they have never been taught how to be good managers. so its not technically all of their faults. But this is the real reason they dont want you working from the house. they FEEL that they will lose control aka not be able to micromanage you any more and now they will have to actually manage you for real.

:whoa:

That office space is the safe haven where brehs go to escape from nagging ass wives, and whiney children. That must be protected at all costs at least until the kids are school age.
and there's the other problem. because you dont want to go home to your family, we all have to suffer. terrible. real selfish thinking. and thats actually how people think. they have said as much" i dont want to work from home. so why should you be able to?" Like wait. why you hating on me? you want to run away from home for 8 hrs a day. thats on you. you made the choice to have kids. thats on you. you made the choice to marry a person you dont like. thats wasnt my choice.

I work local IT support. I can't lol
you are a manual labor job. so it makes sense. if we all worked from home. either you would have to drive a bit to go to our homes. and get paid more for it. or we would have to come to hubs in our areas to fix our computers. or obviously worse case scenario go back into the office to meet you there.

We can remote into your computer (with your permission of course) and take care of at least 95% of your issues. Or yea the hub/office space to meet if its a problem we can't talk/chat you through fixing yourself or if its just broken asf (if the equipment was purchased/provided by us).
But yea IT can most definitely work from home (MSP get paid MAJOR bank to do remote support, and even more if they have to go on-site). A lot of places just won't do it for the reasons listed throughout the thread. I hate micromanagement unless I screw up something then its fine.

exactly. its not micromanaging when you screw up. its called coaching. say you're new to the job or new to a job within your job duties. lets say you eff up big time. the manager is supposed to take a lot of that heat, because he/she didnt do a good enough job training you. some will say but but what if my employee is just lazy or dumb. thats even more on you the manager, YOU PICKED HIM/HER.

being a manager is the equivalent of being a college coach. you inherit some previous employees(previous players under the previous regime), and you have the ability to recruit talent you believe in that can round out the team. CHOOSE wisely, get better at resume picking and interviews. or keep choosing bad looks and keep having high turnover or keep hiring bad employees which will make you look bad. if you eff up, your manager is supposed to coach you up to fix the mistake(s) made, and to put something together that will make sure that exact mistake most likely wont be made again.

Idk about WFH 5 Days a week, but definitely should be flexible. Mondays are good to meet in person and regroup. Usually as the week goes down so does the intensity. Fridays are usually just admin work days for me.

Being able to tap a coworkers shoulder for clarification or have face to face meetings with people in other deparments cannot be underestimated.

i can tap your shoulder thru a zillion different chat options. i can also pick up the phone and call you. remember everyone in your office isnt right there next to you anyway. you still have to pick up the phone and send emails. MOST of these types of jobs have you sending zillions of emails. so that tells you, you can communicate well via text, email if everyone takes it seriously.

I'm stopping you from working from home? :mjlol:

Free tip, your ability to work from home is between you and your employer. You out here pointing fingers online when the reality is that you lack the leverage to demand wfh. Maybe get your certs up...

I can work from home (many of my colleagues do) but simply choose not to :youngsabo:

you shouldnt need any LEVERAGE to work from home. pay attention to the original thread. IT doesnt make logical sense to work in an office building if you use computers all day long. It doesnt make economic sense, it doesnt make ecological sense.

It's some stubborn dinosaurs in management like you already mentioned. You can try appealing to reason all you like. Good luck fam.

Depends the size of the company. For me, I mesage someone like

“hey, got a question on XYZ” mind if I swing by. Not, “hey, got a question of XYZ, wanna hop on a call”.

The former is quick and direct, the latter a longer process.
