I remember when a lot of these Silicon Valley types were centrist liberals with a libertarian edge. Many of them voted for Obama. I believe the bulk of it has to do with a "Revenge of the Nerds" mentality.
The days of the passionate tech geeks such as Steve Wozniak and people who wanted to get into tech to genuinely benefit society are largely becoming a distant memory.
Now, the tech world is filled with angry weirdos obsessed with "logic", cryptocurrency, and genetic determinism who all want to make as much money as quickly as possible to get back at the "Chads" and "Tyrones" who made fun of them growing up.
Notice how damn near every "groyper" and self-described "Christian Nationalist" speaks with a whiny, awkward, nerdy voice rife with speech impediments.
No way in hell they didn't get bullied growing up.

It is very stupid of people to put their trust in the hands of billionaires who are not really dependent on the country for survival. In the case of Musk, he was not even born an American citizen.
He'll have no problem closing up shop and moving to a different country if it promises to be a greater source of revenue. I expect him to utilise that leverage to push for lower taxes, more subsidies and less oversight.

100%. I've talked about it before, I used to be on the internet in the late 90s early 00's and the latter archetype was all over messageboards and multi-player lobbies. They're hateful because they're social outcasts, and formed a community where they create these plausible deniabilty jokes, where they tell you exactly what they mean because a lot of them are on the spectrum in some sense, but then hide their hand when they get caught or called out by saying it was a joke.
