The black panthers were a threat not only because they were ready to use arms in self defense, but because they also were willing to fuse a critique of capitalism and conservativism with black liberation. Wealthy whites then, just as wealthy whites during slavery were willing to do whatever it takes to stamp out any ideology that could potentially limit their power. Critiques of any system they benefit from(white supremacy, corporate welfare) should be stopped under any means necessary.
Yall wouldn't believe the number of Nazis America worked with here and abroad all because they said 'I'm an anti-communist!' many of them are still alive and others died peacefully with no repercussions for what they did. Think about how afraid you have to be of even a slight change in the status quo if you're willing to work with people who killed, raped, and tortured men, women and children for years. It was in their best interest to dissuade any political movements that question why it is that there are black children being locked up with adult sentences and being forced to endure a substandard level of existence while there are white people who can fund death squads, force those same black people they oppress to fight in a war that has nothing to do with them, and can have more money than 3 generations of their families can spend.
