But I always say this. The employers don't care about who's the most educated/skilled. It's who they feel comfortable with. They'll hire someone they can relate to, feel comfortable with over someone they don't like personality wise with better credentials/experience

This is why I find it funny seeing people getting 10 degrees to impress these white companies. While they have no problem hiring another white person because their both from Ohio, or they both are Lakers fans

Without fail, every interview the manager would ask questions to relate to me with jokes or sports/music/etc tryna be my best friend:mjlol:

This is why I plan to work for 2-3 more years, get out the job market and then start my own business

From a hiring perspective, I would rather have someone who fits better into the work structure than someone who might be more qualified on paper. Thats the importance of the interview, and its also the way that some people enter into a specific spot. If people got hired strictly off of resumes, the workforce would not be as diverse for higher echelon jobs.

Person could be excellent on paper, but have no interpersonal skills or knowledge on social justice.

That's only true to a certain extent. Nobody knows how comfortable they are with you until u get in the door for the interview. But usually u don't get the interview unless u fit the qualifications on paper. So u still need the degrees to get u past stage 1

Beginning Quote...

"PayPal once rejected a candidate who aced all the engineering tests because for fun, the guy said that he liked to play hoops. That single sentence lost him the job. No PayPal people would ever have used the world “hoops.” Probably no one even knew how to play “hoops.” Basketball would be bad enough. But “hoops?” That guy clearly wouldn’t have fit in. He’d have had to explain to the team why he was going to go play hoops on a Thursday night. And no one would have understood him..."

That's what they mean by "cultural fit". Imo cultural fit is just another subtle form of discrimination.
I think thats where it becomes important to research the culture of the company you're applying to, and sell yourself on how you would add to that culture. Thats part of being resourceful, and it shows initiative. I don't want to hire someone who doesn't take the time to at least look into what the hell they applying for.

As an employer if they can't at least do a bare minimum of that, how can I expect quality work once they're hired and comfortable being complacent?

You can still get multiple grad degrees because those are going to land you the interview, but if the hiring manager or what have you doesn't like your personality, good luck, keep trying because the next one just may love you.

"Tryna be your best friend"?

Nah bruh. They want to see if you're a fit. As people mentioned, cultural fit is important in any work dynamic. Is there the potential for discriminatory practice inherent in that? Sure. Is it a slippery slope? Possibly. But if you have a culture in the work place where a micromanager would be a problem, you're probably going to try to weed them out. If the office enjoys happy hour, softball league or some other type of group activity, presenting as a lone wolf that isn't trying to be someone's "best friend" can present as a problem.

As an HR person, spending time coaching and training staff, the importance of employee engagement and having the right pieces around goes well above a degree and prior experience. That can get you a seat at the table, but it's not going to keep you there. On paper background is one thing, but having limited interpersonal skills, being someone difficult to work with, or simply being unwilling to take part in office culture very quickly "others" you well before anything else can.

When I got hired it was because I had both :manny:

I couldn't have even gotten in the door without the minimum requirements (A Bachelor's degree)

As I've hired people over the years it's the same thing. Minimum gets you in the door for the interview, but who you are gets you the job
