I think it communicates that you like her and want something more. A long hug or embrace , not a side hug or quick one either, and tell her she smells good or compliment her.

It's funny but I usually never kiss on the first date. There's been times I have smashed on first date and a few I just kissed. But overall I hate to cloud my thoughts. A bad date ending with a great kiss can have you reconsidering. So I like to avoid that temptation and reflect on the date with an empty conscience.
