I want to talk to my South Florida residents as it relates to work. Tell me how many positions that you were solidly qualified for but wasn't eligible because the employer stated - BILINGUAL REQUIRED? (These positions range from Warehouse to Corporate positions.)

It's better in northern Broward County; Dade County may as well be Cuba, etc. There was a petition floating around on line a few years ago. It had roughly 3,800 signatures at the time. Sad. So, I am glad to see the EO in place and [hope] it takes effect immediately. I was born & raised here - I plan to reside, retire in Miami, and be buried here.

It's nice to be bilingual but it SHOULDN'T hinder you from gainful employment that you are definitely qualified for.

If it's an EO, then it only applies to federal agencies that's under the Executive's purview. And it's temporary. If they wanted that to be permanent, it would be a law passed by Congress and signed by the President.

I saw a lot of job postings that said bilingual on them when i lived in texas.

But if you could speak english you were still capable of landing those jobs. i landed a "bilingual" position myself

While I've never held a bilingual position (and never applied for one either) I temped in Corporate positions that were looking for BILINGUAL candidates.
I speak enough spanish to get spanish-speakers to fully bilingual personnel but what became apparent was that NOT being bilingual wasn't critical to daily operations in that role.

So, I wondered why it was a requirement vs preference...

I think its just a preference, i don't speak any spanish. and most spanish speakers that do any business with you in this country are going to spoke both english and spanish anyway, Especially if you work for some large corporation. There aren't any spanish only speaking accounting depts or spanish only speaking large scale suppliers. If you do business to business transactions english will work. Some of my client are Chinese companies, they don't expect us to learn mandarin either.

Now if you work the drive through at a mcdonalds in the right area,. than yeah maybe being bilingual would help. but its not really something that scales up the corporate chain.
