So what do you recommend for the non talented 10th negro. I don't have a collegiate degree, I'm older and still struggling, but wanna do my part as well. I fully own up to the failures I've made in life and would hope to guide others from a similar path. What can we do?
Thanks for chiming in guy.
With my experience with this kinda stuff, dudes who used to live the life and decided to turn it around are the best teachers.
First things: start reading. Library cards are free. Start checking out the newspaper. First book I always recommend is the Autobiography of Malcolm X if you haven't read it already. Be well informed and read about things that interest you. Check out some TED Talks and folks like Neil deGrasse Tyson on YouTube. Learning shouldn't seem like a chore.
Second: it's a different way of thinking about things but if you're gonna be an investment in the black community, start taking care of that investment. Eat better, start exercising. Get your family to do the same.
Third: starts with the family man. If you have kids or young relatives, put them on to some books or get them into sports or martial arts or some kind of after school stuff. Keep them busy and involved. This Christmas, try to get them something educational. Looked it up and there's a science center and some museums around. Take em to stuff like that. Again, if it seems like a chore or they get bored, try something else out.
Look up local volunteer organizations. Consider whatever talents you have an asset. If you played sports or know some kind of sport, try coaching. Depending on what you do for a living, there are usually black xxxxxx organizations you can get in contact with. I see there is a 100 Black Men organization in Birmingham. Contact them and see what they're about. You don't dig 'em, look somewhere else.
We aren't all meant to be Martin Luther Kings so don't worry about not having a doctorate. First get yourself straight, then your folks, then find a niche where you think you fit and go from there.
Good luck brother!
