EP vs Mixtape

I was listening to a collection of unreleased Nas music from the ****** album session. There are about 6 pretty good unreleased tracks from those sessions, that were left off for whatever reason and they'd make a very good and cohesive EP. I think it would've enhanced the whole ****** album experience. However, a few of those tracks ended up on the ****** tape mixtape.

Back in the day, a rapper would release the album and then before the album hyped died all they way down, they would release their EP with maybe a new track and unreleased tracks from the sessions. The example that comes to mind was Ice Cube, who after he released Americas Most Wanted, released the Kill at Will EP and it too was very good.

While not familiar with all the particulars regarding mixtapes and the financial agreement rappers have with giving up their unreleased material, I do know this is an option with tracks that contain uncleared tracks.

What I am asking is that you all chime in on which type of release you like and why also, if you have good knowledge the benefits of the mixtape including if or how the rapper gets paid, please share.
