Turkey was behind a lot of the stuff that happened in Egypt and elsewhere supposedly during the Arab spring. Also Qatar and maybe Bahrain from what I remember. I know Turkey played a key roll in Egypt though.
I never heard of turkey being involved in the arab spring before.

I was out a bit earlier tonight but you're going to want to look for articles from when the Arab Spring was taking place. The Ottoman Empire used to hold sway over most of the Middle East and North Africa and who/what country wouldn't that control/power back. In Egypt Sisi ultimately won out but they say the Muslim Brotherhood/Morsi were backed by Turkey and they were doing the heavy lifting. To a lesser degree you have the Sunni/Shiite allegiance thing going on but most of North Africa is Sunni from what I know so they're more inline with Saudi/Turkey anyway.

That would push turkey into the Russian camp. A security dilemma nato could never overcome. Europe will not use economic warfare as long as erdogan runs turkey. He'll definitely retaliate. Not to mention Europe is in no position to damage their own wobbly economies. While he likely floods them with Syrians further fracturing EU beyond just UK leaving.
Turkey holds a lot more cards then everyone realizes.
