Erykah Badu stopped by the Rap Radar podcast recently and spoke on her family’s reaction to OutKast’s song “Ms. Jackson.” The track was written byAndré 3000 about his real-life struggle with Badu and her family over their son Seven.

According to Badu, she’s never discussed it directly with Seven. “We’ve never talked about it, but he’s a huge fan of his father and he’s a huge fan of us personally,” she said. “Seven has a look on his face all the time, it’s the same look where you don’t know if it’s smiling or not. But the look, it’s almost as if he’s saying ‘I hope it’s working out for you.’”

She heard the track for the first time in the studio. “I was working onMama’s Gun at the time and James Poyser busted into the room going ‘Have you heard 'Ms. Jackson’ yet?‘” she said. “I still had a kind of sore spot, like I don’t want to hear that, especially when I heard Big Boi’s verse. And then when I heard André’s verse, I felt very good because his verse was really really inspiring.”

The emotional honesty of the track is what Badu enjoyed most. “He just told how he felt.. and I’ve always respected that and listened to what he felt and appreciated it,” she said. The person who liked it the most was unsurprisingly her mother. “How did my mama feel? Baby she bought herself a Ms. Jackson license plate. She had the mug, she had the ink pen, she had the headband, everything. That’s who loved it,” Badu said.

“Ms. Jackson” originally appeared on OutKast’s 2000 album Stankonia.

TBH I didn't know it was about her either.
Most of us were probably middle school or younger when it dropped. Crazy to think it was 16 years ago.

Big boi was the homie that had your back when you got your heart broken. Coming with that straight ether.
Andre 3K spit that truth w/o burning bridges or going too far. I can see how they respected it, esp considering they had a kid together.
