I'm 29. I think I was 13 when I first heard outkast songs--mainly the ones that were real mainstream--"so fresh and so clean", "roses", and "hey ya". It wasn't until my early twenties when I heard some of their older music and was like "oh this was outkast?"
I don't think their older stuff was real popular where I was living at the time--the stuff they put out in early 2000 is when they gained popularity where I lived. And I never read into Ms Jackson being anything but a random song--so like you I never cared to know that it was about Badu.

Where you from? Because I'm 28 and from new york. Outcast got big around Rosa Parks I can't remember how old I was but I was in elementary school and knew Outkast well. Rosa Parks and bombs over Baghdad. When I got older I went back and checked out southernplayalistic and the other shyt. And I actually knew the song elevators but didn't know it was Outkast until I got the albums. But yeah Outcast blew up in the 90s
