I just saw that they used internet search popularity as one of their criteria to determine fame.
If you have to look up someone's name on the internet how famous are they really brehs?:russ: Just means the media are pushing that name hard on people who otherwise don't check for those athletes.

So if I tell you that the 13th "most famous" athlete in the world according to this list is Virat Kohli (good name though :youngsabo:) and you all google his name to find out who the fukk that is and forget his name by tomorrow because you don't fukk with cricket like that, it will still make him more famous according to these metrics and you might bump him up a place for next year. Meanwhile we're in here extensively discussing how famous Durant and Federer are and none of us are googling their names because we know exactly who they are but it won't show up in their metrics at all and they might drop a place next year.

Great methodology ESPN :heh::bryan:

Michelson in the top 5 and articles like this is exactly why ESPN is in the dump right now...

I dont know about the rest but it's Ronaldo followed by Messi and Serena definitely cracks the top 10...She's been the most dominant female athlete on the planet for over a decade...

Michelson should be no where near the top 30...

This is such a pointless list and not worth arguing over.

Only one who clearly doesn't belong is Phil Mickelson. Is Tiger technically retired? He's def still substantially more 'famous' than Phil.

But they always do that with these pointless lists....put someone in there or at an unexpected spot to keep the 'puters 'putin.

You can tell who didn't click on the link and read the criteria for the list. It combines "endorsements with social media following and internet search popularity."

That's why LeBron and Phil Mickelson are up there because of their endorsement deals. Unfortunately Serena's always been underpaid endorsement wise.

It isn't a pure list based on popularity, it's about how much money their name generates and how much their name rings on social media.

:what: not one baseball player? You cannot tell me Hope Solo is more famous than Ichiro or A-Rod or Jeter.

I absolutely believe Phil Mickelson is Top 5, if for no other reason than that Enbrel commercial gets aired AROUND THE MF CLOCK. lol
