I would defend him if he hadn't said, "Just don't watch it. There are like 800 TV channels." That's actually telling people NOT to watch ESPN. Different than criticizing a segment.

He really is a cash cow for ESPN though. Without him they'd have to fall back on ... Rick Reilly as their most famous outspoken writer. Lmfao.

Bill Walton just referenced the suspension during the Oregon-Washington game. I'm guessing ESPN execs won't be happy about that.

EDIT: Walton's quote was, "They're going to suspend Bill Simmons; anything is possible." This was a few minuted after a Ray Lewis limo murder joke.

The stoop with dat dope fanny padding
that's about as hard a stance that ESPN can take on Simmons. They can't fire or he'll take his Grantland Network to NBCSPORTS for more money :pachaha:

Yeah, Simmons has some clout and is a draw in the sports world

His podcasts do huge numbers as does grant land

This is about as severe a punishment they can give him because if he went to any of these new sports networks coming up he could hurt espn

And worst part of all is he's 100% right about the Richard Sherman thing, Sherman was acting like an insecure drunk 18 year old girl

I'm not the biggest Simmons fan (actually like a lot of the guys on his Grantland site much better than him)...but E!SPN hit him with the lightest suspension they could

it was like when your mom would hit you on the hand for reaching in the cookie jar like "don't do that again boy!"...only diff. is you knew not to test your moms again...Bill will test E!SPN again because he can

some of his best material in the past has been some of his more controversial subject matter...his analysis for the most part is not good...but when he takes a stance (such as his anti-goodell stuff) that stuff can be pretty good...so for him to remain relevant and continue to appeal to his core base that he built by being a little ridiculous he's going to have to test E!SPN every now and then.

so E!SPN is basically doing what the NCAA does when one of their major programs violates and they don't want to hurt them too bad and maybe cause an unexpected reaction...hit them with the light sentence.

I think the sentence should tell people just how much ESPN does value Simmon's work. Dude was suspended from Twitter, not ESPN or anything, he can still report to work and do his daily routine except one minor thing for 72 hours. To me it was just a friendly reminder to Bill that he isn't bigger than ESPN (or First Take for that matter) and that there will be repercussion for his habitual line stepping on social media.

ESPN could have easily let this go since it was pretty harmless and something everyone believes about Skip and First Take but I guess it was way past time for them "punish" Simmons also this non story puts ESPN back in the news which is always good for them.

This is why ESPN will never be TNT when it comes to NBA coverage..

Falling in lock step and toeing the company line is an outdated media model..

At the end of the day people respect honesty...

And Grantland>>>>
