Ether is absolutely the GOAT diss record. Before Nas dropped that record he was looking weak as hell. Dropped weak ass Nastradamus album and got clowned by Jay-Z on The Takeover. The Blueprint was such a hot album at the time, since Nas hadn’t responded for months heads were starting to say that Nas was finished. Fell off. He dropped Ether like a nuclear bomb :banderas:

That's why when they say that it was school yard insults I laugh at them

That's the whole point man lol. And you're spot on with Jay Z not being as cocky as he used to be. If you were there the level of brashness he was on was unbelievable.

All facts to both. Hot 97 was so pro Jayz that even they didn’t know what to do. It was definitely a moment because Jay was untouchable at that point…..then he got on the radio sounding mad defeated. Blueprint 2 and Supa Ugly didn’t hit the same as responses either.

greatest intro to a diss song ever :wow:

*gunshots* fukk JAY Z :scusthov:

Part of what made that so sick is ‘fukk friendz’ where that was sampled from had just officially come out on Until the End of Time. So a lot of people had just heard Pac say that for the first time.

It was fresh in your head if you were a fan. I was, so when I heard that ‘fukk jay Z’ it was literally like :lupe:

Angie Martinez was disgusting s*ucking off jay like that. Calling her show ''the takeover'' and then trying to manage Jay's feelings when they announced nas won the poll. I loved how nas flamed her, flex and the all radio after that.

Kinda like drake, you're not just going against a rapper but against the machine.
That's what made the victory so spectacular, and it wasn't just the diss, it's the fact that he came back with Stillmatic lost tapes and God's son as a victory lap, because Jay went at his artistry. So theses releases were a response too

Hot 97 was so pro Jay in that era it was crazy. When Stillmatic freestyle dropped they "banned" diss records and then after Takeover came out they had a show called Takeover that came on after Angie Martinez where the takeover instrumental would play (Nas alludes to that in his Power 105 rant being a big reason he went so hard at Hot 97). Hot 97 always picked favorites though from BIG in the 90s Jay in the early 00s to 50 in the mid 00s.

Edit: My bad I see post above talk about that as well.

If you look at it, Nas although people recognize his greatness, has always been kinda underated by the mainstream outlet and even disrespected to some degree by them.
It started with the source awards and the way they subbed him for the lyricist of the year win over biggie. He was probably worthy of the album of the year and new artist of the year too but I get why they would give that to biggie, but lyricist of the year when the kid dropped illmatic and you supposed to be the bible of hip hop ? That was a spat on his face.

And the hot 97 thing too after (I'm just glad they stopped him from hangin the jay z mannequin) . And they recently did it too with vlad, pitchfork and all theses medias that don't know shyt about the culture that are trying to undermine his accomplissement Even the joe budden podcast, the ebro, rosenberg and them who should know better, they give nas his accolades but reluctantly. They were forced to recognize the greatness because it was 6 albums, but when you saw the jay praises for just a verse and just a few words for a 6 album quality run it says a lot . Thankfully, a lot of new fans podcasts since the beginning of the hit boy run has publicly contribute to put people on the greatness that nas' carreer is and give him is true props

We were supposed to takeover :banderas:
But I caught her bumpin ether :scust:

Biggest L in hip hop history

Some of the funniest verses ever are when both Nas and Jay address the battle in the subsequent years.

“In a range rover dissecting lines from Takeover/some times I text Hova like nikka this ain’t over”

Lmao

Them nikkas get a good laugh out of that shyt now when I know back then they wanted to tear each other’s heads off

Jay was feeling himself so much prior to ether dropping..

U couldn’t tell jay shyt at the time, he was getting paid, magazines and media wanted more Jay interviews, he could do no wrong in NYC eyes.

So he was like nas career is dying and pac already punked mobb deep years back so coming into this championship series, this will be easy:mjlol:

Dude drop takeover and people was :laff::ohlawd::skip:at prodigy kid pic and was saying nas is done and jay was up 3 games to none

Then came December 4th in this case game 4-5-6-7 and Nas dropped tupac voice fukk JayZ and that beat drop.. oh man it was a wrap

Jay was like a deer in headlights, stuttering in interviews, racing to make any silly diss track and it was over..

He brought a dead man career wise in Nas back
