Ether is absolutely the GOAT diss record. Before Nas dropped that record he was looking weak as hell. Dropped weak ass Nastradamus album and got clowned by Jay-Z on The Takeover. The Blueprint was such a hot album at the time, since Nas hadn’t responded for months heads were starting to say that Nas was finished. Fell off. He dropped Ether like a nuclear bomb

Ether was a psychological diss. He applied pressure where Jay's insecurities were and let him know that no matter how successful he was he would still be his little man. But he did it in the way to let us know he didn't want to do it and Jay forced his hands. Like a mafia boss forced to take out his beloved lieutenant.
