let's break down ether a little
a lot of jay stan often say yeah takeover got to have more props because he beat Nas with just one verse BUT they forget that Ether dissed Jay really in the 3rd verse. The two first verse were litteraly little subliminals, he even took the 2nd verse to make his own autocritic.
What was great with ether was the way Nas took a lot of Jay lines and flipped it . Like the way he said I will not lose is the exact way Jay was sayin it on "u don't know" and he made it a smart chorus.
Then the girls, girls, girls ad lib to make fun of Jay making a player song when he's ugly a fukk.
The "roc we running this rap shyt" ect of the ruler's back turned into "roc get gunned up and clapped quick"
A lot of people says the ether beat is corny, but listen to the instrumental and tell me you ain't hype when you heard it. It's not the best beat ever but was the PERFECT beat for that type of song. Just listen to to all the ether remix on youtube including the 9th wonder version, some beats may be better but NONE match the lyrics and give this impression of ultimate battle atmosphere as the original beat.
And as my man said earlier, Nas was talking to Jay like we was still the eternal underdog. Like Nas said in real nikka alive and an interviews, Jay had a complex about Nas (and Biggie), he wanted to be in their league. Remember Jay despite being older than these two dropped only two years after them and blew up whan tupac and biggie both past away. He was the one reaching for biggie nas and az to be on his video as an acceptance pass for him amongst the greats.
Jay said it on "reach the top" and "this can't be life" he was in despair to blow especially when he saw Nas and Biggie becoming hood heros with their albums. So he was targeting tupac to make him talk of him even if pac never met the man and was indeed suckin biggie's dikk to make him look good. He reach to preemo to give him beats same way nas and big did
Nas also flipped the "who's the best Jay Z, Biggie or Nas" (notice how Jay was throwing himself in the discution when he clearly wasn't) and said in ether who's the best "Pas Nas and Big"
Nas said that despite all of Jay success and Nas decline after Nastradamus, Jay felt the obligation to definitly be the king by crushing Nas himself, and Nas who was reluctant to do anything was pushed by cats like Jungle and Prodigy to retaliate and the rest was history. Nas is smart though, one of the reason supa ugly didn't hit as hard as he should is that Nas leaked the info about Jay and his baby mom in the media right before so it was not a surprise anymore
