Open borders seem like they would be a good idea, but with ideological seperations between a lot of the Western and Eastern European governments, the fact that international law is a hodge-podge of inconsistencies, and with the refugee crisis going on right now, they're actually not.
Same for AU call for open borders, which is just an awful idea point-blank.

Yep. No one had any issue with free movement for decades, and lost in all of this is that the both the left and the right in Western Europe have always been STRONG defenders of the freedom of movement. The left for ideological/political reasons (building towards a real EU citizenship, increased opportunities to know other countries/learn languages, etc) and the right for economical reasons ("free-market" stuff like go where the jobs are).
The divide between West and East is very real, and I was against the 2004 enlargment precisely because the history, context and economies were (and still are) just too different. I believed we had to first deepen integration in the West between countries that are used to working together and have similar contexts. East should've continued receiving development help, slowly integrate EU programs, eventually build up some kind of parallel union between them (with special access to the EU) and THEN integrate the EU. It should be noted that it's mostly the right, and especially GB (backed by the US) which were pushing HARD for that enlargment, precisely for economic reasons but also political ones, knowing damn well that Eastern countries woudl slow down the integration process.
If anything, the refugee crisis shows how limited the EU is. The EU does not grant any asylum, nation states do. And registered asylum seekers have to stay in the country where they are registered, so they don't benefit from freedom of movement. (Also, freedom of movement has never stopped random border checks. They just can't be systematic. And freedom of movement only applies to people who are regularly in the EU, meaning EU citizens, immigrants/tourists who are in Europe legally and refugees who actually have the refugee status, meaning not asylum seekers.) That's why Eastern countries let people march through and THEN closed the borders, so that they register in another country. Also the EU (as in other nation states) have for too long let the South and East alone in managing this issue, especially Italy. It's like if Corsica had to manage refugees without the help of the rest of France. So there's deep distrust all over regarding this issue.
But EU even wants to do away with what little illusion there is, for what the last decade has demonstrated to be zero benefit. Everyone in the EU but Germany (

I dont see your point...Humans have always banded together for security even before the first philosopher started thinking..there was always protection from numbersSecond human beings are domesticated livestock..putting them in a state of sudden freedom might actually be dangerous..its like letting your dog loose in the wild...it wont turn back into a wild dog..it will just die from hunger or thirst
