Exactly. That's the problem with these qualitative ratings. There is no differentiation. Like I said in a post earlier today. Games that are 7s and games that are 8s and games that are 9s will get the same 'recommended' label. How is that helpful? There's a big difference between a 7 game and a 9 game. You can't get that with a simple like/dislike rating
I see the new format as the "number" being the text and the pro and cons elucidated in the review. The label at the end of the review is a "Overall, I recommend this game." since having said that the reader would've likely read the review in full and got the full gist of the game. That way someone who is comparing say two similar games will actually talk about the games contents and features and less about the number.

Honestly all jokes aside, I don't really have a beef with Metacritic as like you said it's a tool that I've used myself occasionally and it has exposed some games to me here and there. My beef is with some of the extremist dependency on Metacritic and the outright refusal to even give things a try simply because of a number. That's usually what makes me go like :mindblown:.

I think the move by some reviewers is to force some of their readers to read the review and stop just jumping down the page looking for the number in bold. Even though we may use multiple sites and aggregates overall for an assessment of a game's quality as subjective as that may be(good or bad), some people only check one or two sites. I know people that only check IGN or only look at Gamespot.com.
I think this move is targeted towards those people.

People don't like reading. tl;dr. Those people that only look at numbers aren't gonna start reading eurogamer reviews now. I think it's a dumb fukking move.

I think it'll make a few people here and there read. Besides, you still have the other gang of review sites and MC to go off of so EG not being on there shouldn't really make a dent. EG is just one less fanboy tool for forum goers :yeshrug:.

But that's just one opinion. Why would I trust that over 80 opinions?

Nah it won't make a dent at all in metacritic (there are hundreds of review sites). If anything it'll make less people read their reviews. I click on review links from metacritic. I can't be the only one. Them taking themselves outta the equation completely just makes no sense to me.

Your job as a consumer isn't to trust just "one" opinion. I'd take it into consideration but by all means I wouldn't make that one opinion the end all be all.

They probably did it for reasons like they're tired of backlash from fanboys and other shyt that goes on :yeshrug:?

Oh I don't doubt they're scared. This is a p*ssy move on their part, like I said earlier today.

It's just gonna hurt their revenue though. Less clicks means less ad revenue. I see it hurting their bottom-line.

I think it also shows their lack of confidence in their own opinions and reviews. It's a weak move in my opinion

those people will still scroll right to the 'conclusion', or just try to skim shyt :yeshrug:

and a lot of the time I don't blame them, because these reviewers can get carried away and start likening games to Citizen Kane and shyt

No worse than games being compared to dikkens :sas2:

But hey at least the latter is coming to PC soon. :sas2:

The last of us IS the citizen kane of gaming :umad:

Its literally the first time in my 20 so years of gaming I've cared about the characters or story of a game. I mean actually CARED and been emotionally invested.

Video games are ART. fukk ebert. They deserve to be written about in detail.

Oh and @Ciggavelli. You really need to stop calling reviewers "professionals." They are just a normal person bound to their own bias, can fall for hype and be influenced like anybody else. Last time I checked you don't need to attend university and get a degree to review video games for a website.
