I've known about this for a while from the RealGM forums, but I wanted to just share it with you brehs. If you search hard enough there are so many gems here.
This is basically an archive from internet forums back in the 80s and 90. And apparently yes, they did exist back then.

Kobe Bryant vs Ron Mercer
3/1/98
Eliminating salary cap and other extraneous considerations, would you trade Ron
Mercer for Kobe Bryant?
There's no way in hell that I would. Personally, I think Kobe's overrated due
to the hype machine that is L.A. I also think that he gets alot of attention
because he came into the NBA out of high school. But if you look at his game,
it isn't all that special. So what if he can jump through the gym and produce
highlight film dunks? Have you seen Mr. Mercer the past few games? There's some
quality dunks if that's what you want.
Mercer has the better overall offensive game. He's much more of a pure shooter
than Kobe. Bryant's more of a chucker. I will give Kobe this - he does have
better range as a shooter. Mercer has yet to show (or even attempt to show) he
can shoot the three. Maybe this will come with time or maybe it's something
that isn't part of his game. Either way, I'd take Mercer over Kobe any day of
the week.

1) Michael Jordan is so individually dominant that his team is never ever
> going to win a championship. He used Wilt as an example. It's not until
> Wilt lowered his scoring average in 1967 that he won his first ring.

On Kobe Being A Ball Hog His Second year in The League
1/24/98
Is it just me or is Kobe Bryant a ball hog? He is only the 6th man on the
Lakers, yet he has taken the most shots. There is no denying, Kobe has great
skills. But if you watch him play, he usually goes one-on-one the whole time
he is on the floor. The only time he passes is when he is in trouble or the
coach tells him to run the often boring post play to Shaq. Kobe Bryant is over
hyped and overrated. The league needs more team players like G.Hill,
A.Hardaway, J.Stockton, E.Jones, C.Barkley, T.Gugliotta, and K.Malone. To me
those players are the stars and should be paid the big bucks. All you Laker
fans (including me) shouldn't get too attached to Kobe Bryant. After next
season, Kobe becomes a free agent. If players like Jim McIllvaine, Bryant
Reeves, and Brent Price make 2 million and over, Kobe will be asking well over
$100 million. I don't see how the Lakers can pay Shaq, Cambell (another
overpaid player), Robert Horry, Kobe while also keeping players such as Rick
Fox, Van Exel, and Eddie Jones. Just my 2 cents
Here is a list of overrated or over paid players:
Alonzo, Garnett, K. Anderson, B.Grant, B.Reeves, E.Cambell, J.McIllvaine,
B.Price, T.Knight, C.Childs, A.Houston, P.J. Brown, J.Howard
Here is a list of soon to be over paid and overrated players:
S.Nash (rumors that he will be asking for over $6 million a year), J.Smith,
J.Stackhouse
I know this will anger many fans and i would like to read your responses. LMK
what you think.

KOBE MIGHT TAKE MORE SHOTS THAN OTHER'S BUT THERE IS ANOTHER PLAYER OUT THERE
WHO TAKES TOO MANY SHOTS, I THINK IS NAME IS JORDAN. KOBE IS YOUNG AND IT'S TO
EARLY TO TELL IF HE IS OVER RATED. I AGREE THAT HE WILL BE ASKING FOR WAY TO
MUCH MONEY WHEN HE BECOMES A FREE AGENT. BUT THAT IS WHAT THE NBA IS ABOUT
"MAKING LOTS OF MONEY" KOBE IS A GREAT YOUNG STAR AND LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER MJ.
First and foremost I would trade Gary Payton to the Wizards for the #1 pick and
courtney Alexander
Second trade Vin baker and Desmond Mason to the hawks for Theo Ratlif and there
first round draft pick.
In Free agency I would sign Marc Jackson and Nazre Mohamed
In the draft I would select Eddie Griffin with the #1 pick and #12 pick select
Michal Bradly. With Atlantas pick select KWAME BROWN
Lineup for next year
PG Brent Barry Shamond williams
SG Courtney Alexander Ruben P
SF Rashard Lewis Eddie Griffin
PF Theo Ratliff OO, Michal Bradly
C Marc Jackson Nazer mohamed, Kwamee Brown
My logic behind this is that we become younger, bigger and more athletic
Makes sense for washington with Gary payton and a Michael Jordan Back court
thats scary. For Seattle we get a legitamite scorer in courtney Alexander,
something I dont see D-mase becoming even though I like him. To top the trade
of we can get Eddie Grifin a 6'10 version of shareef abdure rahim. Next the
sonics get rid of bakers contract and get a great shot blocking and rebounding
PF in return with a top 5 draft pick and I would select Kwame Brown. This guy
is to tough to pass up could be better than Kevin Garnet in a couple years.
Lets put it this way," A FREAK". I know this would never happen and is a
dream, but its fun to try and be a GM. If there are two priorities that the
sonics need to do is trade Vin baker and trade up and pick KWAME BROWN. KB is
the next KG and better.

Look at Portland. They could
have drafted Michael Jordan, but they took Bowie instead. Everyone
said that they were making a mistake. No mistake. Portland needs
another guard like it needs a hole in the head. Yes, Jordan has
had a great rookie season, but Bowie has done well and the
Trailblazers are looking strong for the playoffs.

He'd be great, but he'll never play for any other team but the Lakers.
remember he was drafted by Charlotte and his agent orchestrated the
trade with LA (for Divac). The kid wants to be a Laker and will
probably always be one. His jersey will probably be hanging in the
rafters in 20 years.
PsychicsKobe Bryant is the most over-rated player since Danny Ferry. How could
he ever start an all-star game. There are 20 guards in the West more
deserving of that honour. It is pathetic that enough LA ballotbox
Stuffing and 8 year olds with Kobe Bryant shoes can get a crappy player
into an All-Star Game. Who's next........... Acie Earl. Damn.
With Kobe throwing up 10 bricks every game like he did at all-star
weekend. You guys won't even be able to get past the second
round........... You have the 2nd best player in the NBA in Shaq yet
even he can't lead the team to a ring with Kobe showboating around the
court.

P.S. Did you see Kobe at the All-Star Game. He stood at the 3 point line
on defense and waited for his team to grab the ball then he ran down
court for the un-sportsmanlike Dunk. Pathetic. With players like KG,
PENNy and KOBE. The league will be dead in 10 years.
Yep, I'm a Raptor Fan. The Raptors will do better in the long run then the
Lakers because you guys have to put up with Kobe Bryant's constant airballs
and showboating.
3/5/98
HEY THE RAPTORS WILL BE ALRIGHT IN ABOUT 5 YEARS. BY THAT TIME JOHN WALLACE WILL
BE TAKING OVER THE NBA AND KOBE BRYANT WILL BE GETTING ARRESTED FOR RAPE OR
SOMETHING.....
Holy shyt, nikkas really was psychics back then.
@ the acie earl reference
