It’s actually smart and it’s an easy way to do math in your head. If someone asks what’s 177 x 25, you multiply the 100 first, that’s 2500. Easy. We know 8 quarters is $2.00, so 70 times 25 is 1750. Then do it again but take away a decimal so it’s 175. All together its 4,425.
few years ago i was helping some kids with homework, i saw they were doing math this way. i ended up doing this type of math in my mind for larger numbers. it's way easier to recall multiple values and quicker to calculate. i don't do math like that on paper though.
