few years ago i was helping some kids with homework, i saw they were doing math this way. i ended up doing this type of math in my mind for larger numbers. it's way easier to recall multiple values and quicker to calculate. i don't do math like that on paper though.

Biggest issue is when are you never going to have access to a calculator to do that when we all have phones. I was just at the grocery store and I like to calculate shyt to see what I’m saving . But after the 3rd item if calculating shyt in my head I realized why not just pull out my cellphone on do it on there?

Literally this. Adults aren't going to do this because typing it into a calculator will give you the same answer without the risk of error while most likely being quicker. In other words, it's much more efficient.

The thing is the table multiplication is similar to the cross-multiplication you do once you get to college level math and science.

I didn't learn to do basic math like that, but it might give people a better framework to understand higher level math.

I don't know why people are acting like times tables are inherently better. Times tables are memorization, they don't teach you the base principles of math and why the answer is the answer.

so did boomers. Also the elder gen xers are 50+ so my comment still applies to about half of your generation. My airbnb host is 55 and couldn't figure out how to delete an account off of his smart tv.

edit: this generational war is dumb anyway because High school test scores haven't improved for 40 years; top students stagnating - Education By The Numbers none of the generations are really outperforming each other. The only things changing are drop out and teen pregnancy rates.

Makes perfect sense. You know automatically what something is *2 or *10, so you can break it down in easy fragments then add it up.
