It's all about how the music is consumed.
You had the radio as the primary music vehicle. Then TV killed the radio star and through music videos we got a new creative outlet which created a commercial explosion in music consumption. Streaming comes in and then kills the music video era. Streaming also creates an environment where people are no longer buying music. It has greatly devalued music, which is why the vast majority of music stars we have are those who became successful before streaming really took off: Drake, Kendrick, Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Beyonce, etc. There are exceptions of course.
