This has been explained so many times I feel like people play dumb on purpose at this point. His whole body never got light. He was trying to hide his blotches. So at first he would use makeup to cover up the light spots on his body. His condition got so severe he started using make up to blend the dark spots with the light spots. He died with blotches on his skin. He was just inverse blending eventually and using techniques to even his skin out.
