Not a denier of colorism...but in the 50's/Motown era all that...I saw nothing but dark skinned female singers..is colorism a generational thing? Im sure someone well versed will fill in the blanks.
light or dark looks mattered less because people used their ears more than their eyes when it came to music.

1950s
  • 9% of usa homes had tv. there was no vh1/mtv/bet music dedicated channels to watch videos all day.
  • people used radio to listen to and discover music. looks mattered less as someone might go weeks or months before even discovering what the singer looked like. after listening to a song/artist for months the person was already a fan, so him/her being dark mattered

1960s
  • same points as above except most homes had tvs at this point, but they aren't color tvs that show actual skin tone.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Kelly Rowland was not held back because she was dark, she is an average artist
besides the song with Nelly what hits did she have lmoa

The person had the nerve to say Aretha Franklin wasn't as black as Kelly Rowland, I mean I could teleport and slap the shyt out of who every wrote that, I mean damn. Aretha Franklin was pure talent, she didn't have to look like a sex symbol to make it in music he talent was without question.

I'm sick of tired of these c00ns with this inferiority complex, they are projecting out

Yes, White people would be more comfortable around lighter skin people, they white

the problem is why your black ass not more comfortable around black people, why DO YOU WANT WHITE PEOPLE TO ACCEPT YOU SO BAD
U serious fam? U never heard “Motivation”?

Matthew Knowles is not wrong its why Michael Jackson bleached the fukk out of his skinn. Them cacs would not love him as much if he were dark. Its why they use substitutes/stand ins who are not really black to represent black culture like Card I B. But in reality it's all white supremacy, that's the real reason. White supremacy is keeping normal skinned/dark skinned blacks down. The general publics does not discriminate on thst level. If you have talent nothing else matters is how it is until cacs get involved:francis:. And cacs get involved on all levels of entertainment because not a single Negro is even allowed to own a distribution platform:francis:

Michael Jackson had vitiligo...listen to that nikka’s music he was talking pro-Black shyt all in through it especially after he dropped Dangerous. He wasn’t trying to appease White people, he was trying to appease himself. Do not slander the God...

Furthermore, appearance wasn't as big as a thing pre-MTV...a lot of artists pre-MTV were some ugly mothafukkaz lol...but music is an audio artform. Once videos came into play, appearance mattered more. It mattered before, but it mattered 10 times more, so colorism was a thing and still is.

However...colorism isn't Kelly Rowland's problem. She is just a slightly above average artist. Their voices are comparable, but Beyonce has that "It" factor Kelly never had.

U serious fam? U never heard “Motivation”?

That shyt wasn't no crossover hit, they played the song with Nelly on the pop stations, when motivationc ame out Kelly Rowland wasn't even relevant in music lmao, are you serious
that song was nowhere near Keri Helison's song as far as popularity lmao and you wanna say she was suppose to be on beyonce level with that mediocre shyt come on man

Also we talking about white people, they saying basically Kelly Rowland ain't popular with white people because she dark skin, but she was never popular with black people in the first place

Beyonce was always the star, if black people didn't like her the white people never would've listened to her
