Notre Dame football will pay Tennessee State a $1 million guarantee when the Tigers visit South Bend for the 2023 season opener for both teams.

The Sept. 2 nationally televised game was announced on April 5. The guarantee is the largest ever for TSU. Contract details were obtained through a public records request by The Tennessean.

Payment of the guarantee must be made within 60 days after the game is played, according to the contract signed on March 22. TSU will have the option to purchase up to 5,000 tickets for the game.

If you're a potential recruit or transfer, how do you see this?

Weighing the visibility vs the potential for a rout? (or can they pull off an Appalachian State v Michigan upset?)

I used to be against these games..but whatever helps keeps the lights on :yeshrug:

HBCUs have beaten a ton of non HBCU over the past few years, but never a big school like ND. It’ll happen eventually..SU killed LSU in baseball last season..Texas Southern beat the university of Florida & Oregon in basketball last season or two years ago.

I know football is a different animal but those games against ACC, SEC & other big white schools help out a lot. I don’t mind them..G5 & non HBCU FCS teams get killed by these schools every year, so it isn’t like HBCUs are the only ones who get blown out for a check

I don't like it, and I've never liked it. This is just lazy AD's looking for a big payday instead of doing their job and fundraising, working to fill the stadiums for home games, and finding sponsorships. One good thing Deion did while he was at JSU was bring attention to how poor our split was from the Classics we play in. I've always said they should negotiate better deals or remove the middlemen completely and put the games on ourselves. TSU usually brings a pretty good crowd when they're playing another HBCU, so they should've figured something else out.

There won't be an upset, and if ND wanted to they could probably score close to 100 points. It's demoralizing, it wears your team down prematurely plus you run the risk of major injuries.

TnSU needs to get in an actual HBCU conference

We've all been saying that. They have their best crowds when they're playing other HBCU's. We used to play em in the Atlanta Classic. They were a tough team. Their fan base doesn't wanna watch OVC football.

And I bet fans/alum of them white OVC schools didn’t travel to Nashville when their teams played TSU smh. They don’t have to travel far because every team in the conference is near each other but I bet the gates from playing HBCUs all year instead of 2-3 times will make up for that travel cost

A million dollars to get stomped by 5 touchdowns

I mean it’s no different than when Lamar University, The Citadel, Elon, Bucknell etc do it. That’s just part of the game as a smaller FCS school. You do what you can to make money until you don’t have to play these types of teams anymore.
