They gave a good showing in the first half, especially considering how many of their players were out for that game. But the big schools don't really take those games seriously. They play a vanilla offense and defense and only give their starters a qtr/qtr and a half, then they start rotating the 2nd and 3rd stringers in. If a big school were to mash the gas with their starters for a full 60 minutes with the entirety of their offensive and defensive playbooks it would get real ugly real fast.
Yep.
On a good day, FCS schools can carry 63 rosters spots and FBS can carry 85. FAMU had several players missing from roster and took a team vote on whether or not to even have the game. They went out there and showed tremendous heart.

That UNC roster must have started looking like the Persian Army from 300 at some point, though.

As a former hbcu athlete I love it. We are competitors and it's a low risk high reward situation. This brings money into the schools with the initial payment and every time we played a big time school it was a sold out event (hence more money for the school).

People are talking about fundraising and what not but the best thing for notoriety is playing the big names. Coaches also use this as a recruiting tactic
Thanks for your perspective.
I think this ND game is partly due to the Prime Effect, and mainly due to TSU athletic dept's ability to leverage that national spotlight on HBCU sports to their benefit.

Coach Prime spoke out against money games when he was at JSU.
Look up the old clips.

Its an FBS vs FCS issue though.
FBS football programs can have 22 more rosters spots/scholarship athletes than FCS and tend to have MUCH bigger budgets. The schools you listed aren't football powerhouses, but they are members of the Power 5 conferences and share in the BIG revenue that comes along with that. The resources they have available to them dwarfs what an FCS has.

At JSU, Prime had blue chippers at the skill positions, but that doesn't mean that the entire roster was better than the rosters of a low tier Power 5 program.
Virginia Tech lost to old fukking dominion lol. Jackson State could have made a statement by beating up on them scrubs ass power 5 schools. OD not even D1 and they beak the brakes off them. All well coached team with talent can beat a team with more talent that lacks a coaching staff. We see it every year

VT’s coaching staff was ranked dead last in the ACC last year. Offense ranked in the #120s. I bet against them every game last year cuz I know how sorry they was and ate good. It’s sad cuz Jackson State would have punish them trash ass boys.

If only black folks actually believe in themselves they could have made a statement.

I don't like it, and I've never liked it. This is just lazy AD's looking for a big payday instead of doing their job and fundraising, working to fill the stadiums for home games, and finding sponsorships. One good thing Deion did while he was at JSU was bring attention to how poor our split was from the Classics we play in. I've always said they should negotiate better deals or remove the middlemen completely and put the games on ourselves. TSU usually brings a pretty good crowd when they're playing another HBCU, so they should've figured something else out.

There won't be an upset, and if ND wanted to they could probably score close to 100 points. It's demoralizing, it wears your team down prematurely plus you run the risk of major injuries.
Thanks for your perspective.

Are you against money games on GP? How do you feel about playing non-Power 5 FBS teams? The big boy programs are football factories where the athletic depts have bigger budgets than some smaller schools.

But the disparity in resources wouldn't be so pronounced against non powerhouse FBS school. Would you be against that kind of matchup?

Old Dominion only won 3 games last year. And 1 was against Virginia Tech.

So a top tier HBCU football school is afraid to schedule a #120-#131 ranked team because they are too talented? nikkas think the white man’s uniforms is the cloak of Moses :russ:. The coaches for OD could have used the same excuse prime did. But he didn’t make any and said bring it on. Got the bag, and got respect in Virginia by beating the big boys on their block.

I like the Classics. Some of them don't have the attendance they had, but it looks like that's starting to turn around. I just don't like going to get beat up on by major FBS programs for a check. Better to play smaller regional schools on our level if we insist on playing PWC's.

Now we not only play Clemson or U of S. Carolina every year, but we've started scheduling schools like Central Florida or other FBS programs the same year. This year we open up with Jackson St, which will be a big game, but then we play UNC Charlotte, which is an FBS program, and then GA Tech. Doesn't make sense, when we could bring back the Palmetto Classic and bring in Grambling or another SWAC school. Playing non P5's is better, but there's just no atmosphere like a packed Classic.
