I read "I'll Be Gone In the Dark" in February, by Patton Oswalt's deceased window, Michelle Mcnamara, she died while writing it. The book is a comprehensive look at the case, and she wrote a letter to him at the end, telling him he's an old man who will hear a knock at the door one morning, and will have to answer for his crimes.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the case. It's brilliant.

The rapes and murders are really horrifying, and I've read a lot, 40-50 women in Sacramento alone in the late 70's.

It is really disturbing they didn't catch this, I understand DNA wasn't until late 80's, but since even in the first series of rapes in Sacramento, during the late 70's, there was widespread suspicion within the police, that it was possible ex military or ex or current police.

I won't say this is an easy catch, but if you say examined all policemen who quit or were fired from 1970-1980, which can't be more than 500 people, you would see the guy was dismissed from the force for stealing dog repellent and a hammer from a store. Then look at his work hours when rapes were committed.

Also, interested to see what he did post 1980, there was a lot of theories, credible ones, that he was in construction/real estate development as the murders tended to be linked time wise to major developments in all or most of the areas in which crimes were committed.

The full scope of his crimes is insane. The Visalia Ransacker, which is also believed to be him, ransacked over 50 homes and murdered someone, BEFORE the rape series.

I'd probably be pretty easy to figure out it wasn't a military guy based on the number of years the guy operated. America is a police state, I can't even imagine how many law enforcement were in that area 10,000 maybe more?

Just read the wiki on the Visalia Ransacker, it would be a hell of a coincidence if it were someone else just based off the timeframe and location. The time that guy murdered someone he was trying to take a girl and in a later attempt the wiki said the ransacker shot a flashlight in a cops hand with most likely the same revolver used in the previous murder. Looking at US history there were a lot of serial killers operating during that time period way more than now at least but wow.

I feel like the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and to some extent the 90’s were the perfect era to be a successful serial killer. But with the advancement of technology, it pretty much detered these evil sob’s walking amongst us from acting out their twisted fantasies.

Now days everyone is connected through cellphones, social media, cameras etc.

Even with this case, they used 23andMe DNA Database that we voluntarily gave out to catch him.

I’m glad they caught this guy but the feds at our stupidity.
