I mean....it's embarrassing as all hell on replay. But NO ONE knew that happened live except for Moreland and Grimm.
Wedge (M's manager) wasn't even arguing that...he was either arguing that the runner beat it or that Moreland was off the bag.
First base umpires do not watch the ball as it comes into the glove. They watch the bag and listen for the catch. They are also supposed to stay with the 1B til he throws the ball wherever...but this also didn't happen.
Umpires have had a pretty embarrassing year on the field, and although this may LOOK like the worst call, I don't think it is. It's a bizarre situation that is essentially a big fluke.
If anything, one of the other umpires should have helped the ump at first. Probably 2nd, but he probably stayed with the runner/fielder at second.
