explain royalties/masters and how is it important to the artist

i always hear how important it is or if an artist is able to keep his master/royalties thats a win

name some artist that got their masters/royalties

are masters/royalties two different things

how can somebody obtain their masters?

explain, music heads drop some shyt too

Your royalties are basically payment for any usage of your music aside from sales/performances. whether it be ads, shows, movies, video games....etc...basically you get a cut of all that. If youre fortunate/smart enough to obtain your masters....you get all royalty profits from the usage of whatever song rather than just a cut...if a company owns your masters, theyll get the lions share guaranteed. hell...you could be an 80s one hit wonder and still get royalty checks till this day.

Also (I believe) that if the company owns the all masters, they could just put your verse on a different song w/o your agreement.

if you leave the label, w/o your masters...you can't release those songs yourself either.

and like said above, the main reason is the $...the one that owns the masters to copyrighted material could make money off that (I believe for at least 35 years), they will make $ off any radio play, commercial, sample usage etc

I don't even think Drake has them...
Drake has a great deal (not a 360 deal), so he gets more $ off everything, but I still don't think he owns the publishing rights/masters

thats why rappers like Tech N9ne, Macklemore etc will make more money in the long run than these label-rappers...

cuz you know most of these rappers also give most of their tour money to the labels...

If you dont own your masters and leave the label there are also consequences; when it's time to put out a project on a new label, your old one will try to sabotage/piggyback your sales by dropping a greatest hits disc at the same time.

Def Jam , Sony and Jive use to do this a lot in the 90's.

dude sold over a million records 100% independently...If I'm correct, he's the most successful independent rapper of all time
