i always hear how important it is or if an artist is able to keep his master/royalties thats a win

name some artist that got their masters/royalties

are masters/royalties two different things

how can somebody obtain their masters?

explain, music heads drop some shyt too

When it comes to music, its good to have ownership of goods of services rendered. A good artist having their masters, is like an artist music being like a good self-owned property in a good location. You can rent/use the property to any type of person/services and make money from it. If they label owns the master, labels have control as to how the music makes money. Even after the artist have moved on, labels can released songs because the own the label.

Royalities is residual income an artist can make. There is mechanical royalties from CD sales. Publishing royalties from performance, radio, etc play.

Some of the artists who own masters:
Diddy
Birdman
Suge Knight

Often times label own the masters.

Jay-Z (option to buy his masters back)
An artist can buy their masters back.

hell naw, unless u either pay for them or negotiate that in ur contract from the beginning.

that's one of the reasons MJ and paul mccartney fell out. cuz paul taught MJ about owning his music and publishing and MJ went out and purchased a large part of the beatles catalogue and he was getting bread off their music being used whether they liked it or not.

ray charles also owned all his stuff too if i wasn't mistaken

I think bout this all the time...I think early/mid 90's death row might end up iconic Americana like Motown did to a certain extent...and it's crazy that neither suge nor dre will eat off it..dre it doesn't matter as much, he walked away from DR with nothing and still ended up with hundreds of millions...suge on the other hand pissed away a fortune

So here's my question right...with all these 360 deals being handed out like candy, would a label even be willing to negotiate your masters? I mean Drake had a crazy buzz and he doesnt even own his shyt. And can you break up ownership of your masters? Say for instance I had a three album deal on the table, could I give away my masters on the first record and retain them on my next two?

Why don't more artists know about this? I couldn't imagine being courted like Drake was after So Far gone and not rape the label right the fukk back.

He bought ATV which later merged with Sony's publishing division to become Sony/ATV

His estate owns that along with Sony

So, how come he needed that comeback tour to clear up his massive debt that was wildly reported before his untimely death. If he had that catalogue in his arsenal, shouldn't he had been :eat: good forever. :yeshrug:

99% of artists signed to record companies dont own their masters, that includes your maddonas , Prince ,Beatles, Michael Jacksons etc....

Its a given that the company own the masters , once you sign a deal everything you record is their property, where artists were getting jerked back in the day was over the publishing royalties....

Simon Cowell made a lot of money when he was a record exec jerking artists over their publishing, same as Puffy....

you are more likely for a record company to give you back masters of unreleased music....once its been released they aint giving you their masters back

One of the worst parts of the music business is that groups have to split royalties. Thats one reson why groups split up, so they can go solo. A lot of Wu Tang members bitc* and moan about the Rza, but he negoiated a contract with Loud so that each member could pursue a contract at a record company of their choice. Before that, if you signed on to a record company as a group, even if the group broke up, you had to stay on the record label.

One of the reasons record companies are reluntcant to give up control of masters is that they can license the music to commercials, movies, Now Thats What I Call Music compliations.

Suge thought he was on some Michaveli, its better to be feared than loved. If he read Michaveli, he would've know that violence should be used sparingly. If you're in a state where you have to use violence on a daily basis, you've lost control of the situation.
