It happens more now than before. Getting your masters back is like a parting gift for completing your record deal (assuming you negotiate correctly).

You’re definitely right about it being more common for ppl to own their masters today, but I really don’t think them giving back your masters as a parting gift was common at all back then. The labels can’t eat off you if they give you back your masters and you are no longer signed to them. Maybe there was some fringe cases where people negotiated that but I can’t imagine too many artists were able to do that.

This whole Jay sold out Kanye to Def Jam narrative is some anti Jay propaganda though. Jay sold Rocafella and the masters to ALL the releases under the label are included in that (Cam’ron, Beans, Bleek, Young Gunz, etc). To make it seem like Jay specifically gave up Kanye’s masters for his own is really skewing the truth.
