One of the province’s most influential mafiosi was arrested Tuesday evening for trying to extort a nun at a convent in Laval.

Francesco del Balso, 52, could face various criminal charges, including extortion, on Wednesday. To the best of our knowledge, del Balso attempted to recover jewelry donated by his ex-wife to a convent in the district of Chomede a few years ago. According to our sources, the ex-robber’s wife may have donated several pockets of clothes, which contained jewelry worth several lakhs of dollars.
For some unexplained reason, Francesco del Balso suddenly wanted to recover these valuable items at the beginning of the week.

On Monday, he would have presented himself at the Presbytery of the Church of Saint-Maxime to face the priest. Seeing that the priest had no idea what del Balso was saying, the tone must have risen. This was when the mobster would have demanded an amount of $5,000 per week as reimbursement for the jewelry given earlier by his ex-wife. Church officials reportedly contacted the Laval Police Department to file a complaint against del Balso. The latter was arrested and was to be questioned by investigators on Tuesday evening.
To our knowledge, many police officers are shaking hands with Santosh after this “disgraceful arrest” for Del Balso, yet recognized as a big name in organized crime.

Known for his hot temper, the former high-ranking member of the Rizzuto clan has become an expert in extortion over the years. Arrested for gangsterism during Operation Coliseum in 2006, the man who was once one of the main leaders of the lucrative illegal online betting market on behalf of the Italian mafia, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Shortly after his release, del Balso threatened a journalist with our Bureau of Inquiry, who had covered up his attempts to extort pizzeria owners in the Quebec area. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in prison and two years of probation.
