Actor Mark Hamill got a lesson in right-wing fragility when he spoke out in favor of gun control in the wake of the murder of two TV journalists in Virginia on Wednesday.



Hamill was referring to sweeping gun-safety laws that went into effect in Australia after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, in which one man armed with a semi-automatic rifle killed 35 people and injured dozens more in a single killing spree.

In the wake of that incident, the Australian government enacted the National Firearms Agreement, making automatic and semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns illegal.

A national gun buy-back program netted more than 640,000 weapons.

Since then, shooting deaths in the country have plummeted. Nonetheless, U.S. gun advocates see the Australian program as anathema and refuse to think of it as anything other than a tyrannical government’s means of seizing absolute control over the populace.

An Australian Twitter user seconded Hamill’s sentiments.



American right-wingers were not amused.



“OK Luke, we’ll play,” wrote the Twitchy.com staff, apparently losing once again their grip on the difference between reality and what they saw in a movie. “How, exactly, will this get done? Enlighten us, please.”

Some conservative tweeters think the gun violence problem is already taking care of itself.





Others argued that Hamill is a turncoat because the character Luke Skywalker used a gun in his fight against the Empire.

And still others said that Hamill was out of his depth.

exactly. What about the brother getting off the bus after work in east LA at 12am. Hollywood really believing that all of America is like thousand oaks is the real embarrassing part.. Why didn't he say anything about the illegal immigrant murdering that women in SF? It's embarrassing that people feel they need to protect illegal immigrants more then Americans just taking a walk with their father.

how would that stop criminals from stealing guns? And dude who killed those reporters would've still past the background check. Why is it so hard for people to believe that there are bad people that are going to do bad things regardless.

There can't be gun control when firearms are allowed to be manufactured and mass produced.

We can't pick and choose who gets to have guns and who dosen't or we end up like the British living under a Monarchy.

Plus there is already over 300+ million guns in America so the rednecks will just bury them in their backyards.

Exactly.. only people I really push for gun control are people living well off away from high crime areas...

U live in Beverly hills or park ave where u have police presence around the clock, while poor innocent people have to wait 3 hours for a cop to arrive at a murder scene..

I saw this story where this brother, his wide and kid was in their own house in the hood and 2 goons broke in and shot him and rob them....

I stay arm 24/7 cause im not taking any chance..

Look at Illinois.. one of the toughest gun laws in the country same as California and D.C. and look at the murder rates still high
