Brooklyn nikkas still winning.
For a rapper, to crowned King in any city can be an amazing honor but to be crowned King of New York City is comparable to being King of the world. It’s an iconic title and in the past included names like Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z and Nas. However in the most recent times fans of hip-hop have named none other than Fabolous with the title. The Brooklyn rapper opened up about what it feels like to wear the crown. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.
The title King of New York is a huge weight to carry and also can leave someone with big shoes to fill but Fabulous remained humble when asked about being given the title by fans. He said,
“I’m not aiming for any kind of recognition, I’m just doing what I do. But it’s great that you can get a title of such that isn’t, in this day, self-proclaimed. It’s something that the people actually [say]. That’s always dope. he added, “I just try to do things for the city as a whole, to bring dope stuff back to New York,” he added. “Of course, it’s the mecca of it all. So, I’m just trying to do my part.”
There’s plenty of proof that Fab does stuff for the city as whole and one of the most significant examples was his performance at this year’s Hot97 Summer Jam. Fab came out on stage with a bunch of veteran rappers from New York including, Method Man, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Black Rob, Busta Rhymes, Remy Ma, Fat Joe, Lil Kim, LOX and Ma$e. That line up allowed for a ‘classic’ summer jam moment that will forever be remembered as a part of NY and summer jam history and Fab is the one to thank for that. Looking back he said, “It was crazy, man. That’s a lot of people to deal with, that’s a lot of camps. That’s a lot of time, having to fit. Summer Jam gives you a certain amount of time. But we went really smooth.”
Fabolous explained he wasn’t looking for any type of recognition or the crown when he helped put together that star packed line up but he did say,
“A couple of guys told me, ‘You’re the guy that could’ve put this together,’” he said. “I didn’t even look at it from that standpoint ever. That was just something I was trying to do for the city, for the show, for hip-hop. But they were like, ‘You’re one of the few guys who actually could have made this happen.’ So, I got that recognition as well. I was like, ‘Wow. That’s dope.’”
All in all Fabolous recognizes those who came before him and pays his respect to the greats like Biggie. He said, “He represented New York fully. When you saw him out, he always screamed ‘Brooklyn.’”
