I've never played This one, fallout 3 or New Vegas but I've access to all three. I had planned on playing 'em in succession leading up to the release of the latest but never got a chance to attempt that.
Should I do myself a favor and play 'em in Reverse in order to best experience what all the fuss is about the Fallout series; especially since I've heard nothing but disdain for how lackluster this one is compared to the rest along with how much of the previous games strengths got negated in the current installment (Skills, progression trees etc...)?
What differences were introduced in this one that broke it apart from the others, is what in ultimately asking, I guess?
but there's a big difference between people complaining about copy & paste(which wasnt the case with fallout) and people complaining about radical changes that hurts the series. I think NV is the best Fallout(maybe tied with Fallout 1 from the 40% of the game I've played), it introduced a lot of good things to the series such as iron sights, companion wheel, faction reputation, faction disguises, hardcore mode, and weapon modding. Fallout 4 improved the gun play, weapon modding, and armor but that was it, the only things it added to series are base building and companion romance. Now this wouldn't be a problem if they didn't take such huge steps back on so many things, one of the biggest and most noticeable being dialogue, this example was taken from a /v/ post:
A baby is drowning in the lake:
-Fallout 1
Ask for more information
Agree to help
Decide not to help
Accidentally say something that pisses the NPC off, failing the quest
Reveal too much information about yourself, causing the Super Mutants to track your vault more easily
-Fallout 2
Ask for more information
Agree to help
Decide not to help
Accidentally say something that pisses the NPC off, failing the quest
Pop culture reference about the baby
-Fallout 3
Yes, I will save the baby
Depends on the caps
I will not save the baby
[Intelligence] The baby is drowning
-Fallout New Vegas
I will save the baby
I will not save the baby
[Barter 30] Double the caps and I'll save the baby
[Medicine 30] Thanks to my medical knowledge, I will easily be able to save the baby
[Survival 15/30] Uh... yeah, I totally know how to swim
-Fallout 4
Yes
No (Yes)
Sarcastic (Yes)
Hate babies
In the final Fallout NV mission you could talk the NCR, the Legion, or both down through charisma and skill checks, in Fallout 4 you dont have that option, as you can see here(BIG SPOILERS)
you dont really get that choice, no matter what you do either the institute or the BoS gets destroyed, the only way they can live is if you side with them.
Your SPECIAL skills(except charisma) and other skills have no impact on the dialogue choices anymore. Speaking of the SPECIAL skills the fact that you can level them up every time you level up cheapens them, in the beginning of other fallout games you had to carefully choose what stats you wanted to put points in, sure there was a perk that let you level up a SPECIAL stat but then you would be missing out on another stat, and you only got to pick a perk once every two levels and with the level cap there WILL be certain perks you will miss out on so you have to plan or know what kind of character you want to or are building. That's gone in Fallout 4, there is no more 'hmmm which perk should I choose' it is now 'hmm which perk do I need the most for the current situation', it doesn't really matter what you choose to level up because there is no level cap and you can become the master of everything.
Also from what I've played so far(48 hours) there is little variety in the way you can solve quests. In new vegas there were quests where you only had 1 option, but there were many quests that also had 2 or 3 options. For example, in the white glove society cannibal quest you had 3 or 4 options. Beyond the Beef
I haven't seen this a quest in fallout 4 yet with more than 2 options, and many of the quests with two options are complete bullshyt because it changes nothing about the way the quest turns out.
For example, this quest Synth Retention
Before the fight with Gabriel, you talk to a courser and you can tell him that you think resetting the synth is cruel and killing him is better, and the courser says something equivalent to 'okay', when you get to the top you can talk Gabriel down, but that doesn't matter, because his friends will attack you and the courser will say 'i have my orders' and reset him.
I'm enjoying Fallout 4 but I completely understand why many people are complaining about the lack of role playing.
Also the writing and story telling for NV was great, here's a video comparing NV's story to F3's
It really hurts me to say this but I put in about 3 hours in F4, I just got it yesterday, and I really have no urge to pick it up again anytime soon.
The whole engine feels ancient, the graphics are horrendous, and I'm experiencing slow downs and just overall clunky controls. Oh, and fukk the dog by the way. Seriously looked for ways of getting rid of him. SMH.
Another franchise bites the dust? First Halo, now Fallout? my childhood
To play fallout 3 for three hours is to not even play it all...hard to believe you could see anything more than rad roaches raiders and ghouls 3 hours in...Hard to believe you could even make decent weapons mods...
You looking for ways to get rid of the dog and all you have to do is press two buttons to make him go away :grippingafrancis:
You made the right decision breh...if you can't figure out how to make dog go away then everything else is going to be WAY over your head...:grippingafrancis:

I'd still play them in order. You're gonna think Fallout 3 is outdated if you start with 4. 3 had great exploring and locations, NV had a great story and good exploring too, and 4 had mediocre exploring and location, but had good crafting and settlement building (if you're into that...which I wasn't). NV is probably my favorite, but the exploring in F3 is the best (minus the damn subways). Fallout 4 just fell short because of the story, locations, and exploring (it was also more FPS focused than the others). I say go in order
I may start playing it again in the future, but for now I can't get into it. I'm messed around with it for about 4-5 hours since release and I also have no desire to continue playing it.
Been saying it since release. Im forced to be mr goodguy when i want to be a savage. I miss the older games where i can talk shyt and kill damn near anyone. With this game all i have to do is send dog out to fight for me considering he cant die anyway. There are no consequences to your actions in this one.
I agree with much of what's being said in here. I was hoping for a GREAT game, and instead got a good/OK game.
I put in way more hours that I care to count/admit into FO3/NV. I've played them both on 360/PS3/PC. Once I got to the PC and all the mods, it was over. I played the hell out of the games because all the different mods gave me new gameplay experiences.
With 4, it just feels like more of the same from 3/NV...but not in a good way. More of a mundane, here we still go kind of way.
I'm still playing 4 because I've still got a ton to do, but I feel like I'm playing it now while waiting to be by either the DLC or the mods...
It's a game that definitely depends in hype and the lack of high budget rpgs out ar the moment. I definitely hope they don't do the same with the next Elder Scrolls, Bethesda needs to work on their game engine and graphics. They also need to release their games without glitches.
All the major studios have been releasing these AAA game titles and they just aren't hitting. They get great reviews but after the hype dies down like three or four months later you see these type of threads. I bought Witcher 3, MGS V, and Fallout 4 on release day and I've played all of those games combined less than ten hours. I've only played MGS V ONCE. I think a lot of us are just growing bored with gaming. If I can't mod it and make it my own I'm not really going to fukk with it long term. No matter the presentation, developers really aren't giving us something we haven't seen or played before. They're just making more expensive versions of the same game.
Played for about 3 hours at my brothers house and i decided not to buy it. I enjoyed the Witcher 3 and the flawd MGS5 way more..Bethesda is a dinosaur compared to the new WRPG engines out..
I got about 20 hours in. I had to call it quits. The game was soooooo stale. Really disappointing. I love Bethesda's game, but nothing about Fallout 4 felt fresh to me. The inventory is so cumbersome and the whole Pip Boy setup is just annoying to me. I've been playing Fallout since Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics. Fallout 4 will be the first one that I don't complete.
