Not gonna lie, I never made it close to the final seasons of this show. I'm surprised such a famous show went out the way it did.

Sounds like it just flat out got canceled and the final episode wasn't really planned to be the way the show ended.

I never even knew Stefan became a separate character. 9 seasons and it just got unceremoniously canceled with a shotgun wedding type ending. Harriette being swapped out for the final few episodes is disgusting.

Worst fall off of any Black show ever

Fresh prince fell off the last season and a half

Martin fell off about the same amount as FP

Sanford and son fell off the last 2 seasons.

Family Matters fell off like the last 3-4 years.

At least Fresh Prince and Martin got real endings. Family Matters got the wrap it up box special.

Family Matters going to CBS was what killed it. It probably would have lasted another year or two if it stayed on ABC.

Miller-Boyett (the production company behind Family Matters and Step by Step) was being offered less money by ABC to continue producing episodes for both shows after the spring of 1997, and CBS came with the bigger check, so they went there. Most likely, a lot of people thought the show was cancelled, so they didn't follow it to CBS. And Friday nights weren't a great place for television shows because everyone went out except for kids. TGIF was what people watched on Friday nights, and without Family Matters and Step by Step, TGIF never recovered. They had Sabrina, Boy Meets World, and nothing to replace the two shows they lost.

If ABC puts up the money to keep Miller-Boyett from leaving, Family Matters would have gotten another season easily. Especially since they had no suitable replacements.
