you dont have to watch the movie to understand anything. there's a couple tie ins and things inspired by the movie but you won't not understand anything by not seeing the movie

My only concern is...with actors like Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman...I wonder how long it'll go.

Typically actors who are that well-known and big (Freeman for doing The Hobbit), they tend to get pulled to other roles and movies.
