I would say a combination of all those things. What started to open my eyes was when I was in the army and almost got my ass kicked. I had never been around black people from the south and here I am casually dropping the n word. Stupid me had no idea it was offensive cause in NY/NJ young people of all colors said it but not in a racist er way. So why did you ultimately stop using the word? Was it out of respect for black people or was it an overall maturity thing and you realized how juvenile and low-class the word is?

As a 41 year old spic who grew up in NJ and used the word frequently in my teens and 20s, I feel kind of embarrassed for Joe. I cringe every time he uses the word and he uses it more than almost any rapper. The world has changed a lot since the 90s and Joe should show respect to the culture that made him a rich man. Just my two cents

You could refer to yourself as a 41 year old Hispanic instead of a spic. You stop using words that are derogatory to others but not ones that are to yourself? I don't see the whites, Asians, Arabs, or others doing that. I can't speak on black people and the n word usage but if everyone starts calling themselves derogatory terms then that makes things worse and makes them lose their self respect. Their are other ways to address someone or oneself than with derogatory terms.

When I was in middle school, there was a Mexican kid that would walk by smiling and saying nikka to me. I was dumb back then, so I didn't catch that he was getting off on saying a racial slur to me. They know and understand that they're saying something racist, but since a lot of people are saying it, they can fly under the radar.

I get that the n word can become a part of your lexicon if you hear everyone saying it, but there's so many racist Latinos, you don't know what their agenda is when they say that. I feel like a lot of them are trying to dominate us with that word. They found a loop hole to shyt on us to our face and have us look crazy in front of our women.

This shouldn't even be a thing. As long as we allow them to say the word. many of them are going to use it to test our gangsta, while pretending they're not doing that, to make us look soft.
