mos is right. drake is pop. but hip hop as a genre has dominated the charts consistently since it first surpassed rock and roll in 2017. there's an arugment to be made that all hip hop music is pop music right now, ie the most popular genre of music. regardless of your subjective preference in hip hop.
yes, there are artists and categories that represent hip hop's original ethos better than others. but if/when they blow up they really just become more popular. it's not a crossover, the way it was considered in the late 80's, early 90's. drake is not the first hip hop artist to dominate pop music and pop charts. nelly, dmx, jay, eminem, dr dre, kendrick, outkast, snoop... being pop also doesn't automatically mean the music is watered down. imo, if you're attacking drake, you're really attacking him because you don't like HOW he achieves his success. which is arguable. 100%. but arguing that he caters to trends is not the same as suggesting that he's not hip hop.
mos insinuating as much and glossing over the larger conversation seems dumb frankly, and i'm surprised he didn't argue his point better. he knows better. which is why i took it as a shot (or that perhaps there's more going on with him right now), and why i wish his follow-up is what he had led with.
