There's a black ex-pat community in Merida Mexico of about 3500 to 5000 people. Weird doing touristy stuff in another country and running into random local brehs or families.
We are here for the week before we go to playa then Cozumel and back to Cancun. There was a festival in Centro last night and we saw a breh with a Mexican chic that had a BBL. :dead:
You mean downtown. Dont want to be mistaken for a runner or a trackstar.

Did they celebrate the day of the candles there? or is it a Colombian thing? Don't remember it happening in the DR

Mexico, as a country, is viciously rebranding the term "Centro", just youtube any Mexican City and enter centro behind it.
to them, now- its the cultural center of every city , they usually have plazas, parks, restaurant & various activities - all family friendly .

Less than 15 years ago in Cozumel "Centro" really was a damned Hoe Stroll , 3 blocks from where the cruise ships docked - there was actually a brothel called the "Green house" on the front street. you literally could buy souvenirs, Cuban cigars. booze, pot & some a$$ all on the same street, it was wild.

the gov't shut the entire track down rebuilt a lot of it , it was a cigar bar for awhile (with the same damned name) , its going to be a nightclub in the future.

But yeah, Centro in Mexico is rated G , for family now. It took me awhile to get used to it .

They celebrated Candlemas (Día de la Candelaria) in February , Since we have the retirement spot ( unfinished , but its still a reason to go) - we try to go different months every year to immerse ourselves in the culture.
Like how we found out that Puebla is the only place in Mexico that fukks with Cinco de Mayo
Thats how we wound up going to Merida this time, everyone we talked to in Cozumel was like , you need to experience Merida.
Nice city, bigger than i thought , lots of American restaurants & chain stores here.
the dialect is different, not as Mayan as the southern part of Mexico , people are taller.
But some of the people actually speak Mayan, not Spanish, weird.

Thanks for the clarlification. I was on joke time, but good to know.

As a Colombian resident I gotta ask do you feel safe? Obviously you do because you wouldn't be building retirement house but generally speaking what's the security situation?

I feel totally safe technically but I for the most partgo out in the day and even then it's to a park or Plaza or a Mall. My favorite drug stare was robbed maybe 30 minutes before I went there had I went when I was supposed to go I might have been caught up in it.

Despite feeling safe and knowing people in Medellin and going there several times I couldn't recommend the place for the average traveler.

I know a guy who got robbed in his business and another expat is disallunioned by the security siuation.

What's the general security situation I mean we hear that the Playa del Carmen and Tulum areas are generally untouched but what say you?

Tethers made another thread to bash FBA.

Y'all really on here throwing around some term by that fool ass scamming scum Tariq as if it's a real thing. Wow.

Do yall still believe that Tariq and Tariq alone can secure reparations for us? That he has a plan to truly help black people?

:mjlol: wow.

Think a three day vacay is running away brehs.

I know they call them escapes but thats Hyperbole breh.

I haven't been to america in years I'm the one running my boy.

Breh, question about this. So even though you live overseas, you still have to pay US taxes, right? How does that work? And could you get out from under it if you renounced your citizenship?

Cozumel is just different - is probably the most Americanized city in Mexico.
Because it gets 12-15 million cruise passengers a year, they even have our slang terms down :russ:
the front 3 streets along the island is nothing but English speakers because of this, to cater to the tourists.
its location also makes it safe too, since its an island only accessible by a 45 minute ferry ride or plane.
Its only 29 miles around and 14 miles is developed ( some law they made)
you have to have means to do some dirt and get off the island.
only 100,000 people on the island but 30,000 ex-pats (immigrants), and that ran the property values up sky high.

They literally have a tourist police force that caters to North Americans/ Cruisers.
The business owners have an underlying agreement to not let crime get out of hand for tourists as well.
there was a crew running around robbing people at ATM's pre covid,
they were "found dead" in a car on a back street with a note saying they were sorry for the problems they caused.

its very family oriented, you see entire families out at night in the parks , at restaurants, kids playing outside,
reminds me of the south when i was growing up. We have been out all hours at night walking and never been bothered.
clubs cut off between 11 and 1 depending on activity, since mot of their tourists are cruisers , they are gone by 10PM, but its live as fukk before that
someone told us a joke that Cozumel is basically your grandparent night club, Lights out at 9!:deadrose:

there are robberies, but its mostly with Snowbirds - people that come for the winter
they come back and their tv is gone or other electronics, it got worse during the pandemic
Cozumel's GDP is entirely based on tourist dollars , the ships stop coming in, Well.....nikkas is gonna be hungry.
But its funny, a lady down the street from us got robbed and the robbers literally fixed everything thy broke to get in her house, repainted her security closet door & replaced the window they took out to break in :dead:, she didn't even realize she had a break in until she went to put something in the microwave and it was missing.

We have had supplies taken as well, but we are intentionally dragging this out for years to get tax breaks,
but you rarely hear of violence here, more scooter accident fatalities than anything else.

Tulum/Playa weird vibe there - its safe, but for some reason Canadian Drug gangs are waging a quiet war with the locals
you hear of Canadiens getting shot in Tulum and playa once or twice a year, then come to find out its dudes that had to flee Canada to escape charges,
but of course on the news its an innocent tourist out to enjoy the sun that gets violently gunned down( with Meth/crack and heroin on them)
Tulum will be very expensive because the airport just opened this week and there is a large influx of CACS there now .
so basically of you stay away from trouble in those spots , it wont find you.

Merida is the Second safest City in North America , their is a rumor that all the Cartel leaders families live there and its deemed a no violence zone
it got about 1.2 million people and its definitely the cleanest city i have seen in Mexico, but literally have not felt anything out of the ordinary since we got here.

we mainly stay to the south in Mexico and the smaller towns, because the north and west of Mexico is similar to the wild west.
and the news always plays up the violence, but fail to point out that about 80% of Mexico is uninhabited. so the drug route to the US is the hot spot for the action, everywhere else is pretty much tame. Cozumel has a .03% crime rate per year & that is all crime, not split up into subcategories

the cartels have been trying to push in on Cancun, but Mexico has a huge military presence to keep them out .

Anyways, hopping on the ADO Platinum bus to playa in a few, staying a few nights there, back to Coz , then a few nights in Cancun, then back to reality
was gonna take the Tren Maya ( Maya Train, the new high peed rail they are building across the south of Mexico ) but in true Mexico fashion , its not finished, and they are talking with Belize to get routes there as well.
But the platinum bus is nice , wifi , large seats male and female bathrooms, movies, music and infotainment system, Way better than greyhound.

Wow 12 million? I know that most cruise ships are daytrippers but still that's more than the DR as a whole.

I remember hearing about people getting shot in Tulum and wondering why? Makes sense that some goofies would try to get recreate the Movie Blow and end up getting packed out.

yep - Cozumel is a busy place - probably anywhere from 3-8 ships there daily and they focus on the Mega ships now so you can have 20 -30,000 people running around all day jamming up traffic. the locals are flighting a new proposed port on the other side of the island. It would be ridiculous. the island is only so big

But yeah , that shyt surprised me about the Canadians as well

American News: Canadian tourist on relaxing tropical vacation gunned down in all Inclusive Lobby.
Riviera Maya news: Foreign Drug dealer in Territory dispute killed in dispute with local drug dealers

last year, the guy i mentioned in the lobby in Tulum , the guy shot on the beach in Tulum
and the lady that got shot in Playa at that night club, were all drug dealers or mules that got found out and dealt with by the local drug gangs.

You never hear an outcry from the Canadian government either, so you know they were up to some shady shyt, especially if they were cacs.

Now Cancun, is getting weird
the Cartels are trying to push in , so what they were doing during high season is ride jet skis up and down the tourist zone and fire AR-15's in the air near the all inclusive beaches to scare people , but the Gov't sent the Navy after them . they want a piece of that tourist $$ like they have in Cabo and Ensenada on the west coast.
But these East Coast Mexicans Built different, Tourist $$ is easier than Drug $$, so they are going to protect that at all costs.

we talked to someone that works at a all inclusive here and he used to do dirt (I noticed some of his tats, because his sleeve was rolled up)
you have to realize that the average Mexican only makes the equivalent of 8-10 USD a day, currently.
he said he was making about $60 a day a few years ago, when he was about that life - which is Crazy for here
He is now making up to $100 -$200 (sometimes more, depending on the time of year) daily, IN TIPS putting up with drunk gringos and not getting shot at -that peace is a lot better than a reputation. and that is why the Cartels are having such a hard time on this side of the country.
plus there is no viable drug route over here either.
