The goal is not to instill confidence in the market. The goal is to make sure Americans are confident in the banks.
What a lot of slow folks on here who keep talking about let the banks fail don't realize is that the great depression in the 1930s didn't just happen cause the stock market crashed.
It happened cause Americans panicked everywhere and started taking their money out of banks which started massive bank runs and before you know it 3,000 banks closed in 2 to 3 years (that is where you get the old saying from elders who would put their money in the mattress instead of the banks). The money wasn't insured by the government and back then the government didn't bail out banks.
So it resulted in massive company closes and layoffs due to no liquidity from banks. Which created massive unemployment which was around 24 to 30 percent (with the majority of being laid off were men) then due to the bank runs causing a depression. Even then the world was a global economy (not as much now) that it caused a depression in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Russia, China and the rest of the world.
As I mentioned before all countries around the world have money tied up in US banks. If a contagion spreads in the US and the government does nothing it will take down the economy globally. We talking unemployment rates in the US even higher than the great depression.
